Presentation Transcript

1. Learn about how electronic intercom circuits can help players communicateBuild a communication system for the moon

2. Stay safe  Whether you are a scientist researching a new medicine or an engineer solving climate change, safety always comes first. An adult must always be around and supervising when doing this activity. You are responsible for: ensuring that any equipment used for this activity is in good working conditionbehaving sensibly and following any safety instructions so as not to hurt or injure yourself or others  Please note that in the absence of any negligence or other breach of duty by us, this activity is carried out at your own risk. It is important to take extra care at the stages marked with this symbol: ⚠

3. Sound waves and hearingSound waves enter the inner ear They vibrate the cochlea, a snail shaped organ and the nerve endings start to workThese nerve endings create an electrical signal that travels to the auditory nerve in the brainThe brain then interprets these signals, and this is how we hear.CochleaElectrical signalSound wave

4. Paper cup telephoneYour voice sends sound waves inside the cup, vibrating the bottom of the cupThe vibrations are transferred to the string, across the string into the bottom of the other cupThe sound waves become vibrations inside the second cup, transferring the sound of your voiceSound wave

5. Communications on the Moon Football players on the Moon cannot shout to each other as they need to wear a space suit as there is no atmosphereAlso, there is no air for sound waves to travel inTherefore, some form of two-way communications system is needed that does not require an atmosphere i.e. an electronic intercom or walkie talkie

6. Electronic intercomSound waves can be turned into electric signals by using a loudspeaker and an amplifierThe amplifier increases the electrical signal that can then produce a sound output to a second loudspeakerThis one-way system is called an intercom.AMPLIFIERLoudspeaker 1Loudspeaker 2Weak signalAmplified signal

10. Electronic intercom – Step 1Solder the resistors R1 to R4 to the PCB.

11. Electronic intercom – Step 2Solder the capacitors C1 to C3 the PCB.

12. Electronic intercom – Step 3Solder the transistors ZTX300 and ZTX500 to the PCB. Make sure they are the correct way round.

13. Electronic intercom – Step 4Solder flying leads to the loudspeakers LS1 and LS2. Then solder the leads into the correct polarity on the PCB.

14. Electronic intercom – Step 5Solder flying leads to the switch. Then solder the leads into the correct polarity on the PCB.

15. Electronic intercom – Step 6Solder flying leads to the 9V battery clip. Then solder the leads into the correct polarity on the PCB.
