This project investigates the ways that philosopher David Hull (1935-2010) put his own philosophical approach into practice. Hull famously argued for an evolutionary theory of scientific change, according to which, conceptual and social change in science—like natural selection—requires heritability, variation, and differential fitness. I use this as an interpretive framework to highlight Hull’s own contributions to science and philosophy as demonstrated in the contents of his archival . Bridging Community and Medicine. Mohan . This anthology provides a collection of new essays on ethical and philosophical issues that concern the development, dispensing, and use of pharmaceuticals. It brings together critical ethical issues in pharmaceutics that have not been included in any collection (e.g., the ethics of patients as researchers). In addition, it includes philosophical issues that are not within the traditional domain of applied ethics. For example, a game-theoretic approach to combating the emergence of antibiotic-resistent pathogens by spreading altruism. A tripartite distinction provides an organized series of discussions that shows the interrelatedness of philosophical issues from the creation of pharmaceuticals, the creation of demand for them, through their delivery to their ultimate consumption. Dr. James Burt believed women’s bodies were broken, and only he could fix them. In the 1950s, this Ohio OB-GYN developed what he called “love surgery,” a unique procedure he maintained enhanced the sexual responses of a new mother, transforming her into “a horny little house mouse.” Burt did so without first getting the consent of his patients. Yet he was allowed to practice for over thirty years, mutilating hundreds of women in the process. It would be easy to dismiss Dr. Burt as a monstrous aberration, a modern-day Dr. Frankenstein. Yet as medical historian Sarah Rodriguez reveals, that’s not the whole story. The Love Surgeon asks tough questions about Burt’s heinous acts and what they reveal about the failures of the medical establishment: How was he able to perform an untested surgical procedure? Why wasn’t he obliged to get informed consent from his patients? And why did it take his peers so long to take action? The Love Surgeon is both a medical horror story and a cautionary tale about the limits of professional self-regulation. and Toxicology Textbook of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology BScMBBS MD FIAMLE FICFMTProfessor of Forensic MedicineSDM College of Medical Sciences and HospitalSattur, Dharwad 580 009, Karnataka, IndiaP Dr. James Burt believed women’s bodies were broken, and only he could fix them.
