Brindled, Mottled and Oak - tree Pugs Brindled flies much earlier than Mottled - so if it's in March or April then it is most likely Brindled - if it's in May or June then it's most likely a Mottled and Brindled will be quite worn. Oak - tree is also usually much later than Brindled and usually you see them late April and May and they usually look fresher than the rather worn Brindleds. According to the Mapmate database for West Midlands; Brindled flies Mid March to Mid May, with a peak at the end of April. Oak - tree flies Last week of April to First week of June, with a peak in early May. Mottled flies Mid May to End of June, with a peak in First week of June Oak - tree is much shorter and rounder winged than Brindled with a more prominent broader but shorter oval black discal spot. Brindled compared with Oak - tree has a longer, but thinner discal spot which is sometimes difficult to see. Brindled has long wings with an arched convex costa and typically holds its wings arched backward from the body, ie the cos ta is not at right angles to the body (though sometimes they can hold their wings pushed further forward). Mottled has long, but more pointed wings with a straighter costa and wings held at right angles to body. Discal spot is more prominent than in brindl ed and typically shorter and broader though not as obvious as Oak - tree. Dave Grundy Brindled Oak - tree Mottled
