Confucius

“The human race tends to remember the abuses to which it has been subjected rather than the endearments. What's left of kisses? Wounds, however, leave scars.”

Think-Pair-Share

Answer the following questions with a partner in one- two sentences:

What is history

?

Why

do we study it?

How

do we study it?Slide4

Responses

History is the study of the human condition

.

We study it by looking at a) Primary sources b) Secondary sources c) current states of human condition.

We use these sources to study trends and patterns over time, specific historical events and important figures.

We

study history to understand

ourselves; In

essence, history is the most self-reflective academic study.

In terms of utility, we

can recognize patterns, refrain from repeating bad patterns or occurrences, and recognize beneficial practices.

On a personal level, studying

history lends

one

a sense of connection with their

past

and present human community. We can understand how we got to where we are, and

predict where

we are headed. Really it is a “know thyself”

study

Primary Sources

A primary source is anything that was written by a witness/ someone in close temporal and physical contact with the event itself. It is something that directly represents an event or culture, or is a direct product thereof. Letters, first hand accounts, contemporary charts or reports, photos, contemporary propaganda, art, artifacts and

architechture

, contemporary creative writing.Slide6

Secondary Sources

A secondary source is a “second hand account” of a historical event. This would be anything that was written substantially after the

fact. EX

: biography, textbook, non-fiction, movie,

ect
