Work Session: Writer’s Notebook – Read through past entries: Where have you used the comma rules correctly? Put a smiley face next to the sentence/commas. Where have you forgotten or misused a comma? Using a highlighter/colored pen – Put a star next to the sentence and fix/add in the comma – Write the comma rule next to the sentence. Be on the lookout for Comma Splices! Finding nothing? Using your Independent Novel, search for 10 sentences that use any of the comma rules.

What is a COMMA SPLICE ? What is a Comma? A punctuation mark ( , ) used to indicate a pause or separation of ideas or of elements within the structure of a sentence. “Commas help clarify meaning for the reader” ( Purdue, 2012) . What is Splice ? A verb meaning “to join or unite”So a Comma Splice is when a punctuation mark, a comma, is incorrectly used in an attempt to join two sentence clauses. (Note: a sentence clause has a subject and a verb) It’s wrong, It’s not right , It’s unacceptable!

The Problem: The comma splice is a fairly common error in written English. It occurs when a writer joins two independent clauses with a comma and nothing else. The Solution: When two independent clauses are next to each other, you have only two choices : you can either join them, or you can separate them.
