4BenDeMeesteretal.2OverviewoftheAuthoringEnvironmentWedevelopedanauthoringenvironmentforcreatingdiscoverabledigitallearningcontent,makinguseofOpenWebstandards(HTML5,EPUB3)[3].TheusageofthesestandardsimpliesthatlearningcontentcanbemadeaccessiblewithoutusershavingtomakeuseofaspecicL/CMS.Toimprovediscoverabilityandoverallusage,theresultinglearningcontentisautomaticallysemanticallyannotatedintheformofRDFa(Lite).Indeed,theseannotationsfacilitatemachineunderstandability,whichmakesiteasiertoqueryand(automatically)interlinklearningcontent.Furthermore,theauthoringenvironmentnativelyhandlesallmultimediaandinteractivityfeaturescurrentlyavailableontheWeb.Thismeansthataddingaudio,video,andinteractivitywidgetstolearningcontentisaseasyasaddingtextualcontent.Theresultisauser-friendlyauthoringenvironmentthatmakesitstraightforwardtocreatewell-formedlearningcontentthatcanbepublished(possiblytoanexistingL/CMS),discovered,andinterlinked.Theauthoringenvironment10isaWebApplicationthatcanexportwell-annotatedHTML5orEPUB3publicationswithadvancedmultimediaandin-teractivityfeatures.Whenauthoringnewlearningcontent,theusercanmanuallychoosebetweenanumberofpre-dened,well-annotatedsnippetsthatcanbein-sertedintothelearningcontentandarrangedbysimpledrag-and-dropactions.Thesesnippetsfollow(amongothers)theEDUPUBspecication,andareanno-tatedwithSchema.orgtermsinRDFa.Di erentsnippets,thatfollowdi erentspecications,canbecreatedaswell.Theplug-instructureoftheeditorassuresthatcustomactionscanbeper-formedforcertaintypesofsnippets.Forexample,wheninsertingtheintendedageforaparticularexercise,theusergetsadropdownmenuofavailableageranges(Figure1),insteadofhavingtomanuallytypetheagerange(andac-companyingsemanticannotation)inthelearningcontent.Thisimprovesuser-friendlinesswhilealsostreamliningthework owforauthoringdigitallearningcontent.Duringandafterauthoring,thelearningcontentcanbevalidatedusinganXMLSchemaDenition(XSD)documenttoverifywhetherthecontenthasbeenstructuredproperly.Whenreviewingthemachine-understandabilityofthelearningcontentbymakinguseofanRDFainspector11,wecanverifythatthelearningcontentiswell-structuredandthatitcontainsmultiplesemanticannotations,withouthav-ingtheusertoeditanyHTML5code.Asaresult,themachine-understandablelearningcontentcanbeusedasabaseforinterlinking.Forinstance,byqueryingtheWebforallexerciseswiththekeywordAlgebra,andwithatypicalagerangeof11-14,ausercanretrieveallMiddleSchoolalgebraexercises. 10Showcase:http://users.ugent.be/~bjdmeest/lile_demo.mp411E.g.,http://rdfa.info/play/
