I) The Economic Side of Feudalism: Manors

A) The Manor was the Lord’s estate or home.

B) The manor is the basic economic structure of Europe during the Middle AgesC) Set on the idea of mutual responsibility and obligation Slide3

D) Lords gave protection, housing, and farmland to the serfs. Serfs tend the lords farmland and animals. Paid taxes in goods. All serfs owed their lords specific labor duties. Slide4

II) Life on the Manor

A) Most people did not move more than 25 miles away from the manor they were born into.

B) The manor was a self-contained community. 1) Included a church, mill, the manor house, farms, cottages, a common pasture, and a blacksmith. C) Taxes were high on the manor because of increased safety.

D) Had to pay a tithe, or a tax to the church too.

E) Life for serfs were work, work, and more work. Life was difficult, but safer. Slide5
