“godforsaken?”Have you ever been to a place that you would call “godforsaken?”So, if we stick to a literal interpretation of the word, is there really such a thing as a “godforsaken” place on

our planet?

What do we really mean when we describe a place like that?

How do we remedy this problem? What role does the church play?

One of the most poignant and significant names for Jesus is “Immanuel,” God with us.Slide3

JesusOur ImmanuelOver the course of this series, we have studied different names of God. We began by looking at names of Yahweh, God the Father. Last week was a great transition week as we started looking more at the person and work of His son, Jesus.

Today, we will focus on what His name means. But even before Jesus’ name was revealed, Jesus, the person, was promised.

Jesus Promised to Us6 For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on His shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.

Isaiah 9:6-7

(HCSB)

This

is the earliest and most full explanation of what’s to come with the birth of the Messiah.

Five things about the coming

Messiah:

He will be born as a child

He will rule over God’s people and the world.

He will have four descriptive names that reveal His character.

He will be seated on David’s throne, and will have an eternal rule of peace and justice.

This will be accomplished by the zeal of the Lord Almighty – His coming depends on God, not Israel.Slide5

Names of the MessiahIsaiah listed four descriptive names of the coming Messiah that reveal His character:Wonderful Counselor means the Messiah is exceptionally wise and supremely adept at applying it.Mighty God stresses the Messiah’s deity and His power and strength to accomplish His purposes.Eternal Father emphasizes His endless and caring rule with constant love, concern and provision for His people.Prince of Peace means the Messiah is the giver of peace, for He alone can reconcile us to God

Isaiah’s prophecy was realized in the birth and

ministry

of Jesus Christ, Savior and Messiah.Slide6

Matthew 1:18-21 (HCSB)18The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After His mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19So her husband Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly.

20

But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is by the Holy Spirit. 21She

will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”

Savior & MessiahMatthew records the miraculous event that radically altered the course of history forever: the birth of Jesus Christ, God’s promised Messiah. But this event was a much bigger deal that we may often realize. It was a disgrace to Joseph that his future wife was pregnant and he had every right to abandon here before the marriage was finalized or have her stoned for adultery. So God used an angel to deliver the news to Joseph. Mary’s baby was not an ordinary baby, this baby would be the Savior of the world.Doubtlessliving.com

Purpose of SalvationThe angel told Joseph to name the baby Jesus, the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua which means “Yahweh saves.”What has Jesus saved you from? What has Jesus saved you for? What has Jesus saved you to?Doubtlessliving.com

22Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name Him Immanuel, which is translated “God is with us.” 24When Joseph got up from sleeping, he did as the Lord’s angel had commanded him. He married her 25but did not know her intimately until she gave birth to a son. And he named Him Jesus.Doubtlessliving.com9

Jesus Is with Us

Jesus doesn’t just save us and run…He remains.

Before Jesus entered the world, one could only be in the presence of God if they entered the holy of holies, the inner sanctuary inside the temple.

Now, after Jesus’ resurrection, the presence of God is no longer elusive, unthinkable, or impossible.

God is indeed

with us, Immanuel has come!Slide10

JesusOur ImmanuelJesus was promised to us by GodHe came to save us and He remains with us–He is not detached, pitying, patronizing or harsh.

His presence should give us great confidence and comfort as we face uncertain days, evangelize the lost and look forward to His return.

Our Marching Orders18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
