A Space on the Side of the Road vividly evokes an other America that survives precariously among the ruins of the West Virginia coal camps and hollers To Kathleen Stewart this particular other exists as an excluded subtext to the American narrative of capitalism modernization materialism and democracy In towns like Amigo Red Jacket Helen Odd Viper Decoy and Twilight men and women just settin track a dense social imaginary through stories of traumas apparitions encounters and eccentricities Stewart explores how this rhythmic dramatic and complicated storytelling imbues everyday life in the hills and forms a cultural poetics Alternating her own ruminations on language culture and politics with continuous accounts of just talk Stewart propels us into the intensity of this nervous surreal space on the side of the road It is a space that gives us a glimpse into a breach in American society itself where graveyards of junked cars and piles of other trashed objects endure along with the memories that haunt those who have been left behind by progressLike James Agees portrayal of the povertystricken tenant farmers of the Depression South in Let Us Now Praise Famous Men this book uses both language and photographs to help readers encounter a fragmented and betrayed community one occupied by schoolteachers doctors social workers and other professionals representing an official America Holding at bay any attempts at definitive social scientific analysis Stewart has concocted a new sort of ethnographic writing that conveys the immediacy density texture and materiality of the coal camps A Space on the Side of the Road finally bridges the gap between anthropology and cultural studies and provides us with a brilliant and challenging experiment in thinking and writing about America. and . But more than an ethnography on the road, it is an anthropology of the road. Highways are part of an explicit cultural-material nexus that includes houses, urban architecture and vehicles. Complex socio-political phenomena such as EU border security, nationalist politics, post-Cold War capitalism and financial crises all leave their mark in the concrete. This book explores anew classical anthropological and sociological categories of analysis in direct reference to infrastructure, providing unique insights into the political and cultural processes that took place across Europe after the Cold War. More specifically, it sheds light on political and economic relationships in the Balkans during the socialist post-Cold War period, focusing especially on Albania, one of the most under-researched countries in the region. This book explores creative solutions to the unique challenges inherent in crafting livable spaces in extra-terrestrial environments. The goal is to foster a constructive dialogue between the researchers and planners of future (space) habitats. The authors explore the diverse concepts of the term Habitability from the perspectives of the inhabitants as well as the planners and social sciences. The book provides an overview of the evolution and advancements of designed living spaces for manned space craft, as well as analogue research and simulation facilities in extreme environments on Earth. It highlights how various current and future concepts of Habitability have been translated into design and which ones are still missing. The main emphasis of this book is to identify the important factors that will provide for well-being in our future space environments and promote creative solutions to achieving living spaces where humans can thrive. Selected aspects are discussed from a socio-spatial professional background and possible applications are illustrated.Human factors and habitability design are important topics for all working and living spaces. For space exploration, they are vital. While human factors and certain habitability issues have been integrated into the design process of manned spacecraft, there is a crucial need to move from mere survivability to factors that support thriving. As of today, the risk of an incompatible vehicle or habitat design has already been identified by NASA as recognized key risk to human health and performance in space. Habitability and human factors will become even more important determinants for the design of future long-term and commercial space facilities as larger and more diverse groups occupy off-earth habitats. The book will not only benefit individuals and organizations responsible for manned space missions and mission simulators, but also provides relevant information to designers of terrestrial austere environments (e.g., remote operational and research facilities, hospitals, prisons, manufacturing). In addition it presents general insights on the socio-spatial relationship which is of interest to researchers of social sciences, engineers and architects. Scavenger Hunt.
