Due to industrialisation many poor people could not get work. Men, women and children often became criminals. They stole food and clothes. Sometimes they killed people to get money. If a family could not pay their bills, they had to go to prison. The prisons in Britain in the nineteenth century were the worst in Europe.

The Spirit is a jolly giant who wears a green robe that is bordered with white fur. The garment is loose and leaves his chest and feet bare. He has a wreath of holly upon his head and long, free, dark brown curls. He has sparkling eyes and a cherry voice and he holds a scabbard without a sword.Slide9
