A herald is the person hired to take care of the objects of a family's heraldry. . People in medieval times used personal and family banners and shields to express their identity and status in society. Think of your school logo, or the logo of a professional sports team. These logos are so distinctive that you can recognize your school banner or your favorite team simply by their logo. Heraldry is the same kind of thing, but a bit more structured. . Rick . Silaj. In the Twelfth Century helmets and other armour were making it hard to tell friends from enemies.. To help stop this each knight and solider to paint something personal on their shield. These designs were very important in battle (Why?), but they also acted like team uniforms (can you tell me any famous designs that you know?) when knights met in tournaments. . During the Middle Ages knights painted their armor and shields as a way of identifying themselves on the battle field. Out of this practice arose . heraldry. , a tradition composed of a complex system of symbolism which included shapes, colors, animals, weapons and other objects. Eventually, this practice has evolved into the elaborate family crests and mottos of today.. A design belonging to a particular group of people.. A coat of arms is distinct & unique for each group.. May be based on the history or legacies of the group.. Examples: University of Calgary. Alberta Coat of Arms. It became quite fashionable to have a "coat of arms", so people hired artists to design them. The designs weren't just used on shields. They were applied on tunics, saddle blankets, banners and tapestries. They were duplicated in sculpture and architectural features. They were used in signs and advertisements. They were carved into coins, jewelry (e.g. signet rings) and the personalized stamps for sealing letters.. A design belonging to a particular group of people.. A coat of arms is distinct & unique for each group.. May be based on the history or legacies of the group.. Examples: University of Calgary. Alberta Coat of Arms. What does it mean to be a vassal?. Draw . and label the . feudalism pyramid on your paper.. How does feudalism work?. During the Middle Ages, knights wore so much armor, including helmets, that they couldn't be told apart on the battle field. As a result, they started carrying shields and flags that depicted their coat of arms. The coat of arms had symbols called heraldry that identified individuals, families, countries, and sometimes institutions, such as The Church. No two families could have the same coat of arms. .
