May 03 Ð Nov 03 Project participant in a collaborative partners representing Oregon Sea Grant, the Pacific Fishery Management Council (Council), and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). This ÒCommunication Enhancement ProcessÓ exists to engage a community-wide discussion about the communication issues facing the Council and the possible strategies to address those issues. We developed an action plan and a process to encourage improvements where possible. May 98 Ð June 04 Project convener/participant in a new coalition to prepare for and implement programs to assist the fishing family business community as they face fisheries disasters. Working with others - industry groups, federal and state agencies, etc. - to get the groundfish crisis formally declared, develop a peer-based outreach program for assistance and job retraining (with JTPA/WIA), and federal and state legislators to create/provide support. This work led to multiple grant awards (see Grants Feb 00 Project coordinator/convener of the Fishing Families Coalition, a new coalition of fishing families, agency reps., and politicians working together to address health insurance issues for fishing families. Results from a coast wide survey we conducted led to: 1) a series of coastal meetings co-sponsored by the Oregon Insurance Pool Governing Board where over 30 commercial fishing families (80 lives) signed up to receive May 1994 "Jobs in the Woods: A Workshop about 1994 Ecosystem Restoration Contracts on Federal Lands in the Coast Range," a collaboratively-planned, sponsored, and delivered workshop/mini-conference, Philomath, OR. April 1994 Member of a collaborative team that conducted a Comprehensive Member of a collaborative team of education/agency/ngo/community representatives that worked together to design, plan, and deliver a two day conference in October 1993 called "Partners In Change: A New Role for Timber Communities in Federal Forest Management", Oakridge, OR. June 1996 "Towns In Transition: Managing Change in Natural Resource-Dependent Communities," As Co-Principal Investigator of this grant funded project, helped in the video design and production, and co-author of the study guide. OSU Extension Video Education Package, VTP025; 30 minutes and EM8648; 41 pp. National evaluation (n=50) results: 91% rated the video and 78% rated the study guide, very good or excellent. Shared programs that I thought they might be interested in (SAFE, PLP, ocean energy). This resulted in consulting with a NOAA outreach educator in Hawaii who is creating a ÒSAFE-likeÓ program over there. I shared materials and helped him to design and plan on evaluating his Coral Reef Conservation program.
