“Your legacy outlives you, what will they say?”About:The Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast commemorates the 85th anniversary of Dr. King's birth with a breakfast honoring his life and his dream for social change. Timeline:Nominations due: November 22Essays due: December 10 Winners will be notified the week of January 3Essay:In 1968, during Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “The Drum Major Instinct” speech, he spoke about his legacy how he wanted to be remembered. Dr. King said, “Tell them not to mention that I have a Nobel Peace Prizethat isn’t important. Tell them not to mention that I have three or four hundred other awards that’s not important. Tell them not to mention where I went to school. I’d like somebody to mention that day that Martin Luther King, Jr. tried to give his life serving others. I’d like for somebody to say that day that Martin Luther King, Jr. tried to love somebody…”We want to know what the word ‘legacy’ means to you. What do you want your legacy to be and how do you want others to remember you?Criteria:To be eligible for nomination, a teacher, parent or nonprofit community organization must submit a nomination form outlining examples of the student’s character and serviceto othersNominations will be reviewed for completeness as a condition of selection.Nominees will be required to submit a typedessaynot more than 500 words, on what he/she would like their legacy to beHow they would like to be remembered at their school, at their organization, by their peers, etc.Judging will be based on the writing rubric guidelines used in FCAT and FCAT 2.0 writing. Essays should demonstrate focus, organization and conventions.Focusrefers to how clearly the paper presents and maintains a main idea, theme, or unifying point.Organizationrefers to the structure or plan of development (beginning, middle, and end) and the relationship of one point to another.Conventionsrefer to the punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and sentence structure.Awards & RecognitionWinners and runnersup willreceive complimentary tickets for two guests toattend the Martin Luther King Jr.Breakfast on Friday, January 17, 201at the Prime Osborn Convention CenterWinners will be recognized at the breakfast, recitetheir essay and receive an award.
