A Day in the Life of Operational CBTStatewide CBT Simulation, 2019 January 30, 2019

Computer-Based Testing, NYDRAFT2

CBT MilestonesDRAFT3

CBT SimulationKeep it simple! Low stakesDry runNo scoringAllows you to test your networkAllows you to ensure your testing devices are up to date (operating systems, Secure Browser)Allows you to “practice” CBT administrationNo administration workflows through Nextera Admin DRAFT 4

CBT SystemsQuestion SamplerWeb-based tool where students can become familiar with the test format, question types, tools, and accommodations available for operational CBT Offers practice with previously released state questionsNextera® Test Delivery SystemSecure browser Students access and complete tests Downloaded to students’ devices Additional practice with previously released state questions Nextera ® Admin Online Test Administration System Multi-tiered, role-based system Manage students and student-test taking ScorePoint Centrally-hosted software application to score written and constructed response items entered by students during computer-based testing DRAFT 5 Used for the CBT Simulation!

Questar Secure Browser For the CBT Simulation, your students will be using the Questar Secure Browser: Practice Tests are available now in the Secure Browser Same practice tests as are available in the Question Sampler Practice Test Logins are available on CBT Support (i.e., elag03 / practice) There is no rostering of student data in Nextera Admin There is no ability to pause the test and resume testing DRAFT 6

Simulation Quick FactsHow long will the simulation take? The practice tests have between 10-13 previously released state test questions. The simulation should not take longer than one class period or 40 minutes. Where do we get login tickets? You can create them with the already-available usernames and passwords for the practice tests, or you can use the template we’re providing on CBT Support. Will the student’s responses be scored and/or shared with teachers? No. No student responses are stored and they will not be scored as part of the dry-run. The goal of the dry-run is to provide CBT administration experience in the school and provide an opportunity for students to practice with the online tools and navigation within the Secure Browser. Can my students pause the test? No. Unlike operational CBT, pausing the simulation test will not save work for a student to resume testing. DRAFT 7

Statewide CBT SimulationDRAFT8Based on feedback from our operational CBT schools and based on a process developed at several districts last year, we are organizing the first-ever Statewide CBT Simulation: Participation is voluntary Uses the Questar Secure Browser Practice Tests Tests Performance and more Helps schools to better prepare

Questar Secure BrowserThe Questar Secure Browser is available for download from Nextera Admin on the Help>Downloads page.DRAFT9

Questar Secure BrowserUse the Nextera Setup & Installation Guide (SIG) to assist with steps for installing and testing the Secure Browser on your student testing devices. DRAFT10

Questar Customer SupportFor assistance with any issues downloading, installing, and testing the Secure Browser, please contact Questar Customer Support: Phone: 866-997-0695Email: NY.3-8.help@questarai.com DRAFT 11

Step OneDRAFT12 We recommend that schools begin the simulation between 8:30-9:30 or during the first session of the day. The goal is to mimic an actual day of operational CBT when schools within your district and throughout the state are testing first thing in the morning.

Step TwoDRAFT13 Review the practice tests in the Question Sampler or Secure Browser to pick one of the three available tests for your simulation. Create student login tickets with the already-available Secure Brower practice test logins.

Login Tickets We’ve created student login ticket templates for the CBT Simulation, which are available from CBT Support in CBT Resources: https://cbtsupport.nysed.gov/hc/en-us/categories/201173603 DRAFT 14

Login TicketsDRAFT15 Handout to students! Make sure they write down their computer name.

Login TicketsThere are special usernames for all testing accommodations as well as the five alternate languages available in CBT math.DRAFT16 For the Simulation Only: There is no option to provide more than one accommodation at a time to a student for the simulation. For operational CBT, students can have multiple accommodations selected through the Nextera Admin platform.

Online Testing AccommodationsDRAFT17 Student testing accommodations available in CBT: Text-to-Speech (online only) Read Aloud (by Human) Answer Masking Reverse Contrast Background Color Initial Page Zoom

Step ThreeDRAFT18 Identify Proctors and other simulation staff. Create a workflow for how to report technical issues. Consider posting testing signs and following other operational testing day protocols. Plan to provide scratch paper to Proctors for students.

Scratch PaperDRAFT19 Students can request as many sheets of scratch paper as they need during the CBT Administration. All sheets are collected to be destroyed at the end of testing. Students do not need to “hand in” one piece of scratch paper to request another piece of scratch paper.

Step FourCheck on Nextera Admin to confirm your Secure Browsers are the most current version for operational CBT in the spring. Check WiFi, WiFi batteries, find additional power cords, mice, and more. DRAFT 20

Step FiveMake sure Proctors know that there is no “Pause” feature as with the operational computer-based tests. Make sure Proctors understand how to help students navigate to the Questar Secure Browser and log in.The student demographic page will contain default details and will not be specific to the student.Stagger student start times. DRAFT 21

Teacher’s DirectionsThe Teacher’s Directions are changing for operational CBT this year—we are simplifying the script that Proctors read about each test tool. The Teacher’s Directions script will not match the simulation experience. For the simulation only: consider identifying the most important information for Proctors to assist students with starting the simulation ( see Step Six ). DRAFT 22

Stagger Start TimesDRAFT23 It is a CBT best practice to stagger student start times for 25 or more students by 2-3 minutes when students are downloading the test.

Step SixDRAFT24 Proctors should follow the simple steps in Step Six to assist students with accessing the practice tests on the day of the school’s CBT simulation. If you encounter technical difficulties, call Questar Customer Service for troubleshooting assistance: Phone: 866-997-0695 / Email: NY.3-8.help@questarai.com

Submitting CBT DRAFT25 Once all students have submitted the practice test, please considering hosting a feedback session to ask students what they liked, didn’t like, and what they would like to see differently in the computer-based tests. Send your school’s feedback to cbtsupport@nysed.gov !

Questar MonitoringBoth Questar and NYSED will organize local command centers to support districts and schools during the CBT Simulations: Questar will organize their Tactical Operations Center for customer support from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm EST both days of the simulations.Questar will be monitoring CBT traffic to its webservers from NYS.NYSED and Questar will review together feedback from schools received during the simulations. DRAFT 26

Simulation Feedback After both CBT Simulations conclude on March 5, 2019, we will send a link to a survey to all who signed up for the simulation through Technology Readiness or through the webinar. You can also send feedback to us directly at any time at cbtsupport@nysed.gov. DRAFT 27
