A Thorough Guide to Writing Project Space
Prof. Jackie
English 114B
Spring 2015
(adapted from an FCS project @ WMU)Slide2
Section One: Space Description
First, you will need to introduce yourselves and your space. Remember, this is a proposal. Your tone needs to be professional.
Questions to consider here:
What is the purpose of your space?
What products or services will your space offer?
What values drive your space? Are there any?
What plans does your space have for the future? If this one is successful, do you plan to expand? Do you plan to offer more services as the space grows more popular? Explain.Slide3
Section One: continued
More questions to consider:
Who is your target customer? What is your target demographic? Why? If it is multiple ones? Why do you want your space to target multiple ones?
What are the core competencies that your space will need in order to achieve its goals, missions, and/or objectives?
Note: Some of your answers in this section will need to be brief as you will EXPAND upon them in later sections of this proposal.Slide4
Section Two: The Space Itself
In this section you will need to describe the space in terms of the exterior and the interior. Consider these questions:
What does the outside look like? Give detailed descriptions from where the sign is, where the door is, the colors, material of the building, if there is a parking lot out front, etc.
What does the inside look like? Give detailed descriptions. Remember, you need to draw and include a blueprint of the inside and where specific things are located. This should be the text version of the blueprint—with added details and description, of course.
Explain the reasons behind using certain colors, certain layouts, etc.Slide5
Section Three: Space Plan & Development
In this section, you will discuss the industry and marketing part of your space.
This section will require some research. It doesn’t have to be extensive, but it should be semi-realistic.
Questions to consider:
Who is your target demographic and customers? Why? What are the demographic, psychographic, or behavioral traits of your demographic(s) that will make this space successful?
Why is the industry your space is in an attractive industry right now? Why is this a more important space to build in the city than other spaces?
What does it take to be successful in this industry?
Is the market for your space growing/declining/stable/weakening? Explain. Slide6
Section Three: continued
More questions to consider:
What are the important and relevant trends that are likely to influence and/or inspire the industry of your space and/or your target demographic/customer in the next one to three years?
How will your business exploit current trends or opportunities?
What negative things might hinder or prevent your business from meeting its goals, mission, etc.?Slide7
Section Four: Competition
This section needs to consider and answer the following questions:
Name at least 3 current spaces your space will compete with.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of your competition?
How will your space differentiate itself from the competition?
What image/position do you envision for your space?Slide8
Section Five: Marketing Strategies
This section will describe how you will make the space known and market it. Consider these questions:
How will you advertise the space? What mediums will you use?
What types of prices will you have for services/items?
What is the purpose for where your space is located? Why? Slide9
Section Six: Space Operations
This section will describe the jobs that the space will create and need to fill.
This section will also describe the services offered to the customers.Slide10
Section 7: Financial Plan
In this section, you will provide a rough estimate of finances needed to build and start your space. You can ask for any number, but you need it to be reasonable and explain why you need such a number. You will need to explain how much of this number is going to each thing you need to spend money on and why.Slide11
Section 8: Conclusion
Summarize proposal as a whole and reiterate why the city of Northridge should grant you permission to build the spaceSlide12
Reference Section
Any research you do for this needs to be cited in a Reference Section---you don’t need to quote anything or cite anything within the text. However, if you consult anything, you need to cite it here.Slide13
Appendix
Here you will include the blueprint for your interior of the space. This can be drawn digitally or scanned in and attached. If you need help doing this, let me know.Slide14
Group Members
Individually, you will send me an email with a grade report for each of your group members. You will answer the following TRUE or FALSE questions:
The member did his/her/their portion of the work and it was equally distributed.
The member kept up with group deadlines and contributed to the success of the group.
The member deserves to get the same group grade and nothing lower.Slide15
Oral Presentation
Each group needs to prepare an 8-10 minute presentation in which they describe the space, the design of the space, and why the City should grant the lot to the space.
Be prepared to answer questions.
Tips would be to give handouts to the audience with the blueprint, mission statement, and/or an outline of facts. If you want to dress professionally, that’s cool too!Slide16
Grading
The essay will be graded using the same rubric from the past two essays.
The oral presentation will be out of 10 points. If you do the presentation and don’t get any complaints from your group members, you will get all 10 points. It’s basically a credit/no credit thing as long as you cover all required information.Slide17
