Creating texture in painting

Anne

The detail and moulding on the building are very subtly and accurately achieved, excellent attention to detail and very good use of a range of media and masking techniques.As we discussed a little more shading and detail along the right hand side wall would increase the sense of depth and perspective as this appears a little flat in comparison to the rest of the painting.

I really like the texture you have achieved in the foreground with the spattering which creates movement in the painting.

You have achieved a lovely quality of light in the finished piece.Slide3

Pat ; Very successful use of masking technique using wax candle. This has created lovely textural qualities in the paintings which also demonstrate subtle use of colour and shading. The two pieces of work have a good sense of depth and quality of light and you have used the white of the paper very effectively to achieve this. I know one of your objectives was to achieve a soft natural quality in the sky and you have successfully achieved this in both paintings.Slide4

Connie; Two very different pieces of work, one which successfully explores media and texture and the other where the aim is to blend soft tones of colour to achieve a sense of atmosphere. In the textural painting you have effectively used combinations of media and have achieved a sense of movement in the piece through the direction of the brush marks. I also like the texture you have achieved in the sky.

In the 2

nd

atmospheric painting you have successfully blended colour and tone with watercolour washes, you have caught the reflection well, as we discussed try to blend in some of the rigging lines on the boat as this is seen in the distance and will increase the sense of depth in the painting.Slide5
Slide6

Jan; A good beginning and

you have successfully achieved a sense of movement in the painting through your use of lines and brush marks. Your use of colour and colour mixing is always very subtle and you use muted tones very well. Working over the top of the colour with more wax and “Dry” brush marks will further emphasise the curve of the wave and movement.Slide7

Melanie;

You have successfully achieved a sense of depth and perspective in this painting through the diminishing cobblestones and the angling of the door and window frames. The arch has a very challenging angle which works well, you may like to add a little texture with marks of brickwork in places, pastel pencil may be useful for this.

I like the subtle colour palette you have used and you have effectively used shading techniques to record highlights darker tones could be a little bolder in places to emphasis shadows and create contrast.Slide8

Ruth;

A very subtle painting demonstrating good use of colour mixing and soft blending of tones in washes.

The diminishing colour adds to the sense of depth and perspective in the painting as does the scale you have drawn the boat.

You have caught the soft ripples in the water successfully in your drawing of the reflection.

As we discussed just some small modifications needed to ensure that the horizon line is straight and the brush marks in the water run parallel to this. This will help to further emphasis the sense of depth and perspective and draw the eye up to the boat.Slide9

The use of pastel on the 2

nd painting has created an extra layer of contrast and texture. Very good use of colour and colour mixing and you have also caught the lovely sense of light.

Barbara

A very successful sense of depth and perspective achieved in both of these paintings. Boats are very challenging to paint due to the foreshortening depending upon the angle viewed but both of these look in proportion and sit solidly on the water. The layering technique has worked very well in recording the ripples and reflections in the water and particularly in the first painting, the water has a lovely sense of movement around the boat.Slide10

Anne ; Very subtle use of colour and colour mixing in this painting. You have successfully and accurately recorded the shape of the birds, which sit solidly in contrast to the translucent qualities you have achieved in their reflections.

Good understanding of methods of achieving a wash demonstrated and the painting has a lovely atmospheric quality through the use of muted tones of colour and effective composition.Slide11

Caroline; Your preliminary drawing demonstrates a very effective use of composition and you have successfully used scale and considered the whole area of paper. A very challenging subject to record in terms of the perspective of the building which you have achieved well and I really like the colours you have used and the movement you have achieved in the sky. As we have discussed, lifting off some of the block colour would bring a little lightness and contrast back into the walls of the house. By using the flat edge of a small wash brush you could also lift out marks representing the texture of the wood or stoneSlide12

Shirley

I really like the dramatic sky in this painting and good use of vanishing points through having the brush marks meeting at a point outside the painting. The lightness of the sky as it meets the horizon line is also very subtly done.

The brush marks you have used also create a sense of movement and perspective, and the contrast between the sky and the more muted colours of the foreground has become the focal point of the painting.
