The GCSP offers an orientation course for new Defence Attachs. The course analyses major international security questions, especially with regard to the ”New Threats” agenda. It surveys practical issues of protocol, as well as knowledge and practices of international conventions that are an essential part of the task – and builds condence and experience

through a proven simulation of a ”Defence Attach tour”. All aspects meet the requirements of the Geneva Standards for Defence Attach training. Background The evolution of Defence Attach missions, and the fast communications actually available to this part of the diplomatic community, make evident the increasing importance of this international function. Consequently, the primary role that these ofcers play at the crossroads of diplomacy, strategy, economy, and public relations should be professionally prepared for properly. The orientation course will provide a

framework within which each individual will be able to ll his or her own gaps in knowledge and skill. The GCSP is an international founda tion which trains government ofcials, diplomats, military ofcers, international civil servants, NGO staff and business executives in all the elds of international and national security policy. Apart from its courses held in Geneva, it provides a whole range of tailor-made training modules adapted to the needs of its part ners in Geneva and in various regions of the world. The course is facilitated by the Centre’s twenty

resident Faculty staff and through the full availability of an interna tional network of proven experts. Methodology The course uses an interactive learning approach based on experts panels, case studies and guest speaker presentations. Guest speakers are experienced Defence Attachs, practitioners and academics. Each presentation covers a specic topic and is followed by a discussion period. Participants also receive reference material during the course. Objectives The course has 3 principal objectives To improve skills and understanding of defence ofcials in

specic defence issues To provide a strong basis for their future professional challenges as Defence Attachs To facilitate knowledge transfer in defence-related activities and national and international procedures. The course can also address the possible relationship of the Defence Attach with home and national defence industries. Target Audience The course is designed for future Defence Attachs about to be sent abroad.
