Question 1 Colossians 2:16 clearly states that no one should be judged about Sabbath breaking!

Answer Let’s read the text

Colossians 2:16 “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days”.

Before we proceed let’s read the caution given by apostle Peter while reading apostle Paul’s writings.

2 Peter 3:16 “ Even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; In all his epistles … some things hard to be understood

which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.” The “ unlearned ” and the “ unstable ” in scripture will twist Paul’s writings, we are told! But the genuine seekers of truth will understand.

The Apostle Paul himself tells us HOW to handle scriptures.

2 Timothy 2:15 “ Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” We need to “ study ” and not just read . It’s only then we would rightly divide the word of truth.

During story time, An Illustration the teacher asked the children “What was in Moses' ARK ?"

The kids answered... “Animals”!

They got CONFUSED with Moses’ ARK and Noah’s ARK! Because both are called ARK!!

Like the word “ARK” could either refer to NOAH’S Ark or MOSES’ Ark… ..the word “SABBATH” could either refer to the weekly Sabbath or the yearly Sabbath!

First let us see if scripture has MORE THAN ONE SABBATH.

The WEEKLY Sabbath

Leviticus 23:3 “Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.” That is the WEEKLY Sabbath of the 10 commandments

The ANNUAL Sabbaths

Leviticus 23:24, 25 “Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month , in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein ”

Leviticus 23:27, 32 “ Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement... It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest.”

Please Note: Our Roman Calendar starts with January, but the Biblical Jewish calendar starts with the month of Abib also called Nisan which corresponds to our March end or April beginning depending on the new moon.

In the Jewish Calendar the the new moon is the beginning of the month

Feast of Trumpets seventh month, 1 st day Feast of Atonement seventh month 10 th day

The Annual Sabbaths are like BIRTHDAYS that come once a year It could come on any day of the week

Passover —1 day feast Unleavened bread — 7 days feast Pentecost —1 day feast Trumpets —1 day feast Atonement —1 day feast Tabernacles —7 days feast The 6 Annual Feasts* *Some put it as seven annual feasts—the first fruits being the other one. Since first fruits is a part of the unleavened bread feast, it doesn’t really matter. Since the Jewish calendar has mentioned six, I have put six.

Passover —1 day feast (NOT Sabbath) Unleavened bread —7 days feast (2 Sabbaths) Pentecost —1 day feast (Sabbath) Trumpets —1 day feast (Sabbath) Atonement —1 day feast (Sabbath) Tabernacle —7 days feast (2 Sabbaths) The 6 Feasts had 7 Sabbaths

The Sabbath of the 10 commandments came once a week . That is, 52 Sabbaths in a year.

But the other Sabbaths came once a year . And there were seven of these Sabbaths in a year.

So the Old Testament has not just the WEEKLY Sabbath, but the ANNUAL Sabbaths as well

Whenever there are two things that have the same name , the context has to be seen to know which one is in question.

For example: Apostle Peter and Apostle Paul used the word “ARK” in their writings We need to look at the context to know whether it was the Ark of the “ flood ” OR the Ark of the “ Ten Commandments ”? The Context would reveal it!

1 Peter 3:20 “Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.” It’s the ark of the “ flood ”!

Hebrews 9:4 “Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant” It’s the ark of the “ 10 Commandments ”!

WHICH Sabbath was Paul referring to… Let’s look at the CONTEXT The Weekly Sabbath or the Annual Sabbaths in Colossian 2:16?

Colossians 2:16 “Let no man therefore judge you in meat , or in drink , or in respect of an holyday , or of the new moon , or of the sabbath days ”.

Is there evidence in the passage whether it is the WEEKLY Sabbath or the ANNUAL Sabbaths?

Colossians 2:16 “Let no man therefore judge you in meat , or in drink , or in respect of an holyday , or of the new moon , or of the sabbath days ”. Ezekiel 45:17 “… and meat offerings , and drink offerings , in the feasts , and in the new moons , and in the sabbaths ” This is NOT a first time statement that Paul wrote. He is merely quoting an Old Testament passage!

Ezekiel 45:17 “… and meat offerings , and drink offerings, in the feasts, and in the new moons, and in the sabbaths” Which "Sabbaths" was Ezekiel referring to... the WEEKLY or the YEARLY?

Ezekiel 45:18 “Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the first month, in the first day of the month” The first day of the month is new moon

Ezekiel 45:21 “In the first month , in the fourteenth day of the month, ye shall have the passover, a feast of seven days; unleavened bread shall be eaten.” That’s the Passover feast

Ezekiel 45:25 “In the seventh month , in the fifteenth day of the month, shall he do the like in the feast of the seven days.” That’s the feast of tabernacles

So prophet Ezekiel , whom Paul was quoting , was referring to the yearly Sabbaths and NOT the weekly Sabbath when he wrote that verse.

Then HOW can anyone biblically, logically, and contextually conclude that Paul was referring to the weekly Sabbath?

Let’s go to the SOURCE from which Ezekiel quoted... Let's go to MOSES!

Leviticus 23:37 “These are the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, a burnt offering, and a meat offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, every thing upon his day:” Leviticus 23:38 “Beside the sabbaths of the LORD ”` “ The seventh day … is the sabbath of the LORD .” Leviticus 23:3

Besides the weekly Sabbaths , there were other special days called Sabbaths as well ! Leviticus 23:39 “ Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month , when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days : on the first day shall be a sabbath , and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath .”

Meat offering and drink offering, holy convocations, all went together with the ANNUAL Sabbaths! And that is CONTEXT of what Moses said too!

So Colossians 2:16 Sabbaths is a reference to the ANNUAL Sabbaths as it is tied up with the meat offering, drink offering, new moons & holy days!

Let's Look at it a little more closely !

Colossians 2:16 “ Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days”.

Another apostle, James, wrote about JUDGING

“So speak ye , and so do , as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty”. (James 2:12) WHICH is the Law of Liberty? James 2:11 “For he that said, Do not commit adultery , said also, Do not kill .” That’s the 10 Commandments!

And James adds: “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” (James 2:10) Of the 10 points, Sabbath is one point. If we miss any one point we will be condemned in the Judgment!

Ecclesiastes 12:13, 14 “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter : Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment , with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” Look at the JUDGMENT CONCLUSION

So the heavenly JUDGMENT is based on the LAW of of God, And SABBATH is a part of it!

So HOW can apostle Paul say that no one should be judged about Sabbath breaking , when God is going to Judge us by it, and the rest of the other nine commandments? Obviously it CANNOT be the weekly Sabbath that Paul wrote about!

When children mix up with the two ARKS it is LAUGHABLE.

But when Christian adults mix up with the two SABBATHS it is LAMENTABLE!

Question 1 That was the Answer to
