Secret Three: The Secret Of InstructionSlide2

Section 1: How To Teach For Real Life

Real life teaching means relating the skills they teach to real life

Real life teaching means relating the skills, teacher’s teach to the real lives of their students

Example: Teacher A, uses generic methods of teaching, with only worksheets and tests. Where as Teacher B, gives students work that is creative and asks students to make choices. Students are able to make choices based on what they are comfortable with and can relate to. Teacher B, has students interested and involved in schoolwork

Make lessons exciting and inviting by relating what you teach to the student’s lives todaySlide3

Section 2: How To Ensure Active Student InvolvementThe most effective teachers, plan lessons and activities, that involve their students in every part of a lesson

The very best teachers:

plan specific questions they will ask their students

they actually anticipate student questions

They determine how their students, based on life experiences, will best be able to relate to and understand the new skills being taught

They plan activities that will cause students to think, to reason, to analyze, to question, and to understandSlide4

Part 3: How To Ensure Success For All Students

If you want students to succeed, you have to make them successful

The most effective teachers refuse to believe that no student is not capable of succeeding and achieving

The student who appears to be the least successful should have the most attention, and patience from the most effective teachers

Be sure to teach students at their own individual levelSlide5

Section 4: How To Teach EnthusiasticallyStudents need to think that everything you teach is something you love to teach

Teach enthusiastically and student learning will improve drastically

For example, a teacher with a positive attitude and friendly facial expressions with approachability will inspire enthusiasm for learningSlide6

Part 5: How to Align Teaching and TestingThe most effective teachers test what they teach

They test what they have taught in the the same way they taught it

The method for this is, if you want students to do something on a test, then teach them how to do it, practice doing it with them, have them practice on their own while you monitor, and then test them in the same way that they have been practicing whatever it is that you have taught in the same way that you have taught itSlide7

Part 6: How To Pace Your Lessons Appropriately

Part of the secret of effective instruction is making sure that your lessons move along at a quick yet appropriate pace

When a lesson is paced appropriately, things move quickly, students are active and there isn’t a dull or empty moment

Everything flows along smoothly

Tips to let you know if your lesson is appropriately paced:

The students appear interested

Your voice sounds enthusiastic

You actually feel enthusiastic while teaching

You move quickly from one activity to the next, but not so quickly students are left behind

If students don’t understand, you immediately re-teach

Your transitions from one activity to the next should move quickly and in an orderly way

The students seem to understand what you are teaching!Slide8

Section 7: How to Teach Anything to AnyoneMost effective teachers know that if you’re going to teach anything to anyone, you must establish a relationship between the new skill with the student, allow the student to try the new skills on his or her own, and review, over and over, providing as much guidance and practice

First Step: Introduction: This is where you secure the student’s attention and relate the skills to their real lives, with interaction and discussion

Second Step: Teach the new skill: be sure to model the skill for students as well

Third Step: Practice it with the students: known as guided practice, in which the teacher and students practice together, while the teacher monitors for understanding

Fourth Step: Let them try the new skill on their own: this is where you monitor while students practice independently

Fifth Step: Review what was learned: let the students tell or show what they have learned, as opposed to the teacher re-telling or showingSlide9

Secret Three: SummaryRelate everything you teach to the real lives of your students

Plan lessons and activities that will actively involve your students

Make all students successful by teaching them at their level and then moving them forward

Be enthusiastic in your teaching and when you don’t feel enthusiastic, fake it

Test only what you teach

Test in the same way you have taught

Pace your lessons so that activities move quickly, students remain active, and there is never any downtime when students have nothing to do

Follow the basic steps we’ve outlined for teaching anything to anyone!Slide10

Key QuestionWhat kind of activity can you create for real life teaching?
