Chapter 7…Or The Bible By: JT Groce & Sarah Hogue

Summary of The Chapter Nearly all writers and film-makers use a biblical allusion, a biblical name or biblical language in their works, even in the smallest instances. The chapter states, “In modern literature, many Christ figures are somewhat less than Christlike …” (page 53)

How to Identify The name of a work, or the characters in the work, can be a representation of a biblical reference. Example: James Dean’s film East of Eden. In the Bible to be east of Eden, is to be in a fallen world. Some references to the Bible are more subtle than others. Phrases that aren’t commonly used during the time the work was made or is portraying. Example: In James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues” (1957), Sonny’s drink is referred to “like the very cup of trembling” which is a reference to the cup of the Lord’s fury.

The Kite Runner Sohrab uses a slingshot against Assef to save himself and Amir from the Taliban. Amir was jealous of Hassan when it came to Baba, who he seen as a God of sorts. He betrayed Hassan by not trying to help him in the alley. Amir thought he deserved more than Hassan did from Baba in regards to gifts, love and affections. This made Baba angry when Amir would ask about if Baba thought about getting new servants. The Sacrificial Lamb is referenced several times and Amir thought Hassan could be considered the price that had to be paid to keep the kite and please Baba. The Bible David was a small boy who was brave enough to use his slingshot on Goliath to prevent further servitude of himself and his people. Cain became jealous of his brother Abel because he thought God loved his brother more than him, and he eventually betrayed & killed Abel.Lucifer (Satan) was once an angel in Heaven and thought he deserved more than the others in heaven and more than what he was getting from God. This made God angry and he removed Lucifer from Heaven.A lamb is sacrificed to God to show that they would give up their greatest worldly possessions to please God for the forgiveness of their sins. CAN YOU THINK OF ANY BIBLICAL ALLUSIONS IN THE KITE RUNNER?

Examples from other Works In T he Great Gatsby the eyes of TJ Eckleburg are said to see everything which alludes to the idea that God sees everything. In the Disney film, The Lion King, Simba represents Moses who was the prince of his homeland until he was wrongly accused of causing his father’s death. Also, Mufasa died to save Simba just like Jesus eventually dies to save his people from hell.
