Equestrian Statues

By Ashley HubbardSlide2

What is an Equestrian statue?

An Equestrian is a statue of a horse and its rider.

A statue of a horse with no rider is called an Equine statue.

These statues are created by a process known as bronze casting.

These statues started back in Rome.

The people in the statues are important military figures usually or emperors.Slide3

What is bronze casting?

Bronze casting is a method used to create sculptures and statues out of bronze.

The statue would be divided into pieces.

Then, a generalized clay version of the statue would be made. This would be of similar size and shape that they wanted the statue to be.

The clay would then be coated in wax in a way to give the desired look of the statue.

The wax would then be covered in clay.

Next, this would be heated allowing the wax to melt out, creating a mold.Slide4

This equestrian statue dates back to around 161-180 AD.

It was built in Rome for Emperor Marcus Aurelius.

It is very likely that this statue was built 176 AD, when the emperor triumphed over the Germanic Tribes. There is no mention of this statue in the literary sources of the time period, therefore historians aren’t entirely sure when the statue was actually created.

Genghis Khan

This is the largest equestrian statue.

This statue is 40 meters high.

The cost to build this statue was around $41 million.

Genghis Khan was a brutal dictator.
