Excerpts from a column by Rob Brownin the Terrace Standard, April 9, 2008 Not surprisingly, the recommendations of thetask force were a lobbyist픀s dream that smoothlypaved the way for multinationals to take control ofB.C.픀s river power.Under the energy plan, BC Hydro is not onlyforbidden from creating new power, it is forced tower from private river operations atIn the future, Hydro will have to buy privatelygenerated power at $100/mwh as compared to the$5/mwh it pays today. To make matters worse, transmission lines willMeanwhile, Hydro will continue to sell power toThe result of this buy high-sell low strategy willbe a perpetual debt cycle for BC Hydro and much Power Play: The Theft of B.C.Õs RiversThe unattributed source of Rob Brown픀s column [narrator] The report is a lobbyist픀s dream, a per-fect reflection of private interests to take control ofB.C.픀s rivers and energy assets....[narrator] But the B.C. To turncontrol of B.C.픀s rivers over to multinationals.BC Hydro is still expanding its own energysources, most notably with the proposed Site Com new energyfrom infrastructure that was built and paid fordecades ago. But our electricity will still be amongIt costs BC Hydro at least five times that muchto produce its own power. B.C. page 1 Compare the Terrace Standard픀s unattributed remarks in column 1 with the Power Play film픀s relentless misinformation in column 2. Consider the similarity in words. Then read column 3 for a myth-busting response from B.C. The Ònever-ending debt cycleÓ is nonsense. But unless we achieve self-sufficiency our economywill suffer from reliance on increasingly expensiveimported electricity.More nonsense about a Ònever-ending debtcycle.Ó See above paragraph. One error after another: Our rivers aren픀t beingen away.
