On the first day, we were introduced to the idea of Play. Initially we associated it with games and fun, but later realized that it could be used in a much larger context.

The aim of this project was to introduce the idea of ‘play’ in a community other than the immediate Srishti community. We were to reach out to a minimum of 30 people .

We brainstormed to decide the context of our project. We decided to introduce the idea of play in the lives of children who were deprived of it. These included children in orphanages and hospitals, etc.

We did our research and contacted many such facilities but to no avail.

Finally we came across ‘Belakku’, a school for underprivileged children with special needs. It is a non profit organization which takes care of these children free of cost.

During the course of the week we contacted them and after a brief orientation as to the dos and don’ts, we started interacting with the children.

Belakku primarily deals with six disorders, which are

Mental Retardation

,

ADHD

,

Autism

,

Learning Disabilities

,

Cerebral Palsy

and

Down’s Syndrome

.

Initially the authorities were hesitant to let us document our interactions through any electronic media due to ethical concerns and a sense of distrust.Slide3

On the first day of our interaction we were a little hesitant and uncomfortable, since none of us had any experience in dealing with such kids. Also the children were prone to occasional outbursts which added to our anxiety.

But over the course of the 2 weeks that we spent with them, we developed a sense of attachment which was reciprocated by them.

What we understood was that play is not just about playing games or any sports or just passing time .Its an engagement. For these special children a simple games of collecting torn pieces of paper and then again spreading it all over the place was real fun .They found true enjoyment in the most simplistic and basic games.

Their form of learning is experiential or kinesthetic so therefore we tried to incorporate basic concepts through play. For instance, we drew out a circle on the floor to make them understand the concept of in and out. These were a couple of challenges we faced while playing this with them. Firstly, they were unable to grasp the concept of boundaries. So, we had to hold their hands and walk in and out of the circle with them. Secondly, they had a very short attention span due to which they often got bored and distracted. Lastly, due to a low retention capacity, they forgot the concept of in and out which had to be repeated multiple times. Slide4

The fair (Balvikasa)

During our initial days we provided our voluntary services to Belakku in order to get accustomed to the special children and help them raise funds which will be used for these children's education.

Not just help them sell the wares made the children we helped them participate in the drawing competition in which two of them were also awarded. Slide5

Till the time of this annual meet we were close enough to the students and faculty. Now we knew how to handle these children and take care of them.Slide6

The Exhibition!Slide7
Slide8

It started with a slight insight of what their problems are then slowly engaging the viewer into some mind baffling games which were extracted and evolved by our interactions with those children. The next step being explaining them that what you experienced here as a play is a routine for them. Their emotionality and sensitivity was tweaked just through some games. Then showing them a short video of what these children really are to actually make them familiar to them.

Then there was a stall to sell products and raise money for their education

“How they See

What

You See!”

In this small activity we just wanted the viewers to get accustomed to the basic problems of interpreting and expressing things which these children go through.

We also noticed here that what we think is a handicap for these children was actually an advantage above all the normal.Slide10

All the games we played here were to make the people actually experience, for a few moments ,what these children encounter everyday.

The games played with them and problems faced by them were brought up to our IQ level so as to impose the same difficulty as those children.

Initially when people start playing the game ,they really enjoy playing the game but slowly all the games confuse them ,similar to what children go through .

Sympathy is not what they want from us, but positive attitude, acceptance and encouragement .
