Robbie stared at him silently and Alex looked back to the fireplace. “Alex,” he started, “Why did you buy Clara?” “I wanted her to help me…” he said weakly again, “I wanted someone to be there to stop me! I thought…I thought because she was human and her emotions were different than demons , she would be able to stop. I’m such a fool…I almost killed her!” He looked back at Robb ie, “She’s like this now because of me! I…I’m worse than a demon. I’m a monster!” “M…a…s…t…e…r…” said a faint weak voice. Alex and Robbie looked towards the door to see Clara, breathing heavily, holding tightly to the door frame. “Clara!” Alex said panick ed and ran up to her then knelt down. He reached out for her but then stopped. He couldn’t bear to touch her. Suddenly, she wrapped her good arm (right) around his neck and cried, “Master don’t look so sad! You’re worrying everyone who cares about you!” Al ex was amazed, “C - Clara,” he stuttered. “Alex…please don’t cry…” and she lost consciousness. Alex quickly caught her and felt the blood coming from her. Her wound had opened again. Alex quickly stood up and brought Clara back to her room. As he entered the room he was seeing a frantic Martha. “Oh thank heavens!” Martha cried, “I was so worried when Clara wasn’t here !” Alex gently placed Clara on the bed and Martha attended to her wound. Alex stayed in the room and stared at Clara. That was the first time Cl ara had ever called him by his name. When Martha bandage the wound Alex dismissed her and said that he would be watching over her. During the middle of the night Alex woke up to the smell of smoke. He stood up and noticed the house was on fire. He went to the bed and gently picked up Clara. “ Alex! ” Robbie came into the room in his true form, carrying a n injured Martha on his shoulder. “ Robbie what is going on!? ” Alex asked, holding Clara tightly. “ No time Alex! We must get out here! Demon slayers are attacking and killing everyone in sight! ” Robbie exclaimed. Alex nodded and Robbie crashed out the window and took flight carrying Martha. “ Shadow … wings! ” Alex said and a pair of shadowy wings emerged from Alex ’ s back. Alex jumped out the window a nd followed Robbie, still gently carrying Clara. As they were flying poisonous arrows were being shot at them. “ Shadow … protect! ” and the remainder of Alex ’ s shadow formed a barrier beneath them, protecting them from the arrows. Rob bie and Alex flew high in the air and far away from the inferno of the burning mansion. “ Robbie what happened? ” Alex asked as he flew next to Robbie. “ That last remaining child you didn ’ t k ill in that village went to the demon hunter village and told them what had happened. I know it had to be that child, I saw him before the slayers entered the mansion. Everyone that was in the servants ’ room was already dead and Martha here was barely alive when I found her . I didn’t have time to look for anyone else, ” Robbie explained. “ Surely if those slayers had found Clara the y wouldn ’ t have harmed her right? ” Alex held Clara closer. Robbie shook his head, “ No I ’ m sure they would ’ ve killed her too. She was living with us after all and who knows wh at that child told them. ” “ Then are we … the only ones left? ” Alex asked sadly. “ I ’ m sorry Alex, I don ’ t know. As I said, there wasn ’ t time … ” Robbie said back. “ Damn it! And Martha … will she? ” Ales said. Robbie sighed, “ Only time will tell. ” After they flew for hours they landed in a heavily forested area, safe from any demon slayers. Robbie laid Martha gently on the ground while Alex continued to gently hold Clara. “ Shadow … return! ” and Alex ’ s shadow disappeared. Robbie had Martha ’ s head resting on his lap and then he looked to Alex, “ Alex, what do you want to do now? ” Alex looked down at the sleeping Clara and then back to Robbie , “ For now, we rest. Robbie you sleep as well. I know you need it . ” Robbie didn ’ t protest and he slowly fell asleep sitting up, still in his demon form. Alex looked back down at Clara and thought, I nev er wanted this. I never wanted any of this to happen! Clara … he gently stroked Clara ’ s head once, I promise, no matter what happens, I WILL protect you. Clara slightly stirred in her sleep . Alex smiled slig htly; despite what happened to her, she was sleeping so peacefully. Alex was determined, determined not to lose himself again, and determined to protect his friends . “ Shadow … appear! ” and his shadow appeared. “ Shadow … protect these three from anything that is dan gerous and approaching us . ” The shadow separated from A l ex and was on guard. Alex leaned against a tree and sighed. He looked at Clara, cradled in his arms, one more time and then soon fell asleep himself. Alex ’ s shadow did not disappear when Alex slept . It kept on high alert, protect ing everyone as they slept.
