504 Plan vs IEP

504 Plan Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973Prohibits discrimination against an individual due to a disability

Specifically used to provide reasonable accommodations based on their disability so that students can access their educationIEP

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA

)

A federal law that makes public elementary and secondary schools provide appropriate education for children with disabilities

Specifically used for students who’s health condition affects their ability to learn by providing specialized programs and services to help them succeed in school. Slide4

What to expect from a 504 plan or an IEP meeting?

Who will be there? You can request anyone who has a stake in your child’s education to be a part of the meeting. If the accommodations do not meet your child’s needs, do not sign the 504 or IEP.

You can request another meeting or postpone to ensure all your child’s needs are being met. Should be reviewed once a year. Slide5

Home Hospital Instruction

The purpose of home hospital instruction is to ensure a student with temporary disability or illness continues to receive school instruction when they cannot attend school.

For example, can be used when recovering from surgery at home or IV antibiotics at home. A teacher is sent to the home or mutually agreed location to provide 5 hours of instruction a week until the student is able to return to school.

The goal is to ensure the student keeps up with their peers so that when they return, they will not be behind. Slide6

Non-Federally Funded Educational Institutions

This can include day cares, private schools, charter schools, religious –affiliated schools.

These educational institutions legally do not have to follow the IDEA or Section 504 Students are protected under the American Disabilities Act.

You can request accommodations like those found in an IEP or 504 however these institutions may not necessarily grant the request. Slide7

Hospitalizations and School

LPCH Hospital SchoolAccredited through the Palo Alto Unified School District.

Instruction can be given at the bedside once enrolled in hospital school. School can help with obtaining material from home school.

For planned admissions, it is helpful to bring school work and enroll in hospital school for ongoing instruction

To Contact the LPCH Hospital School: 650-497-8230Slide8

Higher Education

Higher education includes a 4-year college, 2-year college, and vocational and trade school. IEP or 504 can transfer from high school to higher education institution.

Register at the Office of Student Disabilities (name varies for each institution). Vocational and trade schools You may need to speak with administration as they may not have an office of disabilities. Slide9
