Cunetesford as it appears in the Domesday Book.  An impressive mosaic can be seen at Canute Place.Slide4

Who used to live in knutsford?

Knutsford has been home to many famous people

including the author Elizabeth Gaskell who wrote Cranford and many other novels, Henry Royce the

engineer who in partnership with Charles Rolls created

Rolls Royce Motor Cars, Richard Harding Watt responsible

for the town’s Italianate buildings, Trumpet Major Smith

of Charge of the Light Brigade fame, and quite a few

others. The notorious Highwayman Higgins also lived in

More interesting factsEgerton. William Egerton started building the present Hall in 1790. It contains many beautiful rooms, including the Music and Drawing rooms which are in red and gold with huge chandeliers. The Hall is surrounded by an estate covering an area of almost five square miles. The last of the family, Maurice Egerton, bequeathed Tatton to the National Trust so that it would continue to be maintained after his death in 1958.
