Day use non - motorized permits are available on site. All other wilderness users must apply for a permit.  Some sites may be reserved. Location East Bearskin Lake Campground is about 26 miles northwest of Grand Marais on East Bearskin Lake.  From MN 61, turn north on County Road 12 (Gunflint Trail).  Follow Co. 12 north 25.5 miles.  Turn right onto Forest Road 146 (East Bearskin Lake Road) and continue 1 mile to the campground entrance on right. Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Permits  Day trips and off - season overnight: Follow directions on the self - issuing permit in the box at the boat landing. Special rules apply, so read the permit carefully (for instance no cans or glass allowed.)  Overnight May - Sept. and motor use: Do not use self - issuing permit. Obtain an overnight permit from a Forest Service office or outfitter. It is a perfect choice for people who want the flavor of the Boundary Waters and the convenience of car camping. Some sites are hike - in access. There are three camper cabins: Aspen and Tamarac sleep 7, Alder sleeps 5. All use lofts, single, double, and bunk beds. Cabins do not have mattresses, bedding, cooking facilities, or bathrooms; bring sleeping pads, bags, and a cook stove. The boat ramp allows access to the lake by both motorboats and canoes. The two eastern bays of East Bearskin Lake are within the BWCAW and require permits for entry. Day permits for non - motorized use are available at the campground, but overnight and motor use permits must be applied for in advance. Be bear aware while camping. Close and fasten campground waste containers. Lock food securely in vehicles - bears have been known to break into pick - up toppers and RV screen doors. Never burn food waste or packaging, and never store food in tents .
