Presentation Transcript

1. Chemical ReactionsChemistry 101This is an additional text plus exercises for practicing vocabulary related to chemical reactions

2. Chemistry 101Each student receives the same materials for this assignment. You will combine a solvent and a solute. If you follow the instructions, the solution creates a simple chemical reaction. Add the limiting reactant slowly to avoid a safety hazard.NOTE: This lab will NOT require additional catalysts. For next week’s lab, we’ll experiment with adding heat.

3. Chemistry 101Objectives:Learn the proper process to create a chemical reaction.Be able to describe the product in your own words.

4. Chemistry 101Materials:400ml of water, your reactant3g of sulfuric acid, your reagent2 pre-filled beakers

5. Chemistry 101Instructions:Add 1g of sulfuric acid to 300ml of water. Adding sulfuric acid in excess of 1g at this point is not recommended. Add 100ml of water. The concentration of sulfuric acid to water should be low. Add the remaining 2g of sulfuric acid.Observe the reaction and report its yield.

6. ReadingRead the instructions. Then, mark the following statements as true (T) or false (F).Students will utilize burners in this experiment.Students are instructed to add sulfuric acid to water. Each student’s materials should create a different reaction.

7. Key words:Solvent – rastvaracSolute – rastvorakSolution – rastvorReaction – reakcija Reactant – reaktantReagent – reagensIn excess – visakYield – prinos

8. VocabularyMatch the words or phrases (1-6) with the definitions (A-F)1 yield 4 solute2 reaction 5 concentration3 reactant 6 limiting reactantA when two or more substances combine in a chemical eventB the amount of something produced during a processC the number of molecules of a substance in a given volumeD a substance that changes during chemical activityE a substance that is completely consumed and stops a reactionF a substance that dissolves into a solvent
