Slide5WHAT IS HIP HOP?
It is a culture created by Black and Afro-Latinx youth and young adults from the Bronx and encompasses 4 pillars : MC GRAFFITTI DISC JOCKEY (DJ)BREAKING
Slide6[Rap] emerged from the streets of inner-city neighborhoods as a genuine reflection of the hopes, concerns, and aspirations of urban Black
youth
in this, the last quarter of the 20th century. Rap is essentially a homemade, street-level musical genre . . . Rap lyrics concentrate primarily on the contemporary African American experience . . . Every issue within the Black community is subject to exposition in the rap arena. Hit rap tunes have broached touchy subjects such as sex, sexism, racism, and crime . . . Rap artists, they contend, “don’t talk that love stuff, but [rather] educate the listeners.” (

Critical Hip Hop Pedagogy
Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning
The implementation of hip-hop into curriculum promotes cultural relevance to youth of color, affirmation of urban identities, and deeper learning through connection with something relevant to youth (Morrell, 2002).
Our Lived Experiences
The raising of critical consciousness in people who have been oppressed is the first step in helping them to obtain critical literacy (Freire, 1970).
“This
approach attempts to address deep-rooted ideologies to social inequities by creating a space in teacher education courses for prospective teachers to re-examine their knowledge of hip hop as it intersects with race, class, gender, and sexual orientation; while analyzing and theorizing to what extent hip hop can be used as a tool for social justice in teacher education and
beyond (
Akom
, 2009).

One
question I have is:
“How
did
Hip-Hop evolve?”
“What
can we do understand the lyrics more
mindfully?”
“Can
you provide several of these events this semester
?”
“How
much influence can hip hop be to the public? How can a change a person’s perspective
