WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SUMMARISE?
To put it simply, summarising is using your
own words to shorten a piece of text so it includes only the essential information. You are capturing the main points of what you have read.In order to summarise, you must read or watch closely the original source, and write the essence of the source without using words or phrases that are similar to the original. How could I summarise this article in five sentences?
The article is a front page feature story in the
Herald Sun daily newspaper, which recounts a heated phone call exchange between US President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. The subject of the phone call was a controversial deal struck with the previous Obama administration, whereby 1250 asylum seekers would be resettled in the United States. Donald Trump was reportedly upset and angry at Turnbull, accusing him of trying to send the “next Boston bombers” to his country. The call became so heated that, according to unknown sources, Trump hung up on Turnbull. Turnbull denied this version of events, stating he had not been hung up on, and that they were “good friends”.
