That You Might LearnSlide2

Advanced Vocabulary!

Harbinger – A sign or message of what is to come, or else the person who delivers such a message or sign.

My quizzes typically are accompanied by three harbingers.

The first harbinger is the set of quiz

bulletpoints

.

The second harbinger is the practice quiz/quiz review.

The third harbinger is the

winking moments.Slide3

English Is Fun!

Our language is really, really fun.

For the first two years I went to college, I was declared as a creative writing minor.

Then I came to ISU, which did not have a creative writing minor at the time.

Of course, they do now, but I am not bitter.

Haha

.

The verb form of harbinger is not “to

harbinge

” as one might expect, but is instead “to harbinger”.

Harbingers harbinger.Slide4

Quiz

bulletpoints

are awesome!

They have a 1-to-1 correspondence with the quiz.

This means that if there are 5

bulletpoints

given, it is a 5 question quiz.

And each

bulletpoint

, in order, matches a question on that quiz

.

In other words, the first bullet goes with the first question.

The second bullet goes with the second question.

Etc.

They allow you to focus, somewhat, your efforts when studying for the quiz

.

Do not

overfocus

, though, since there is material on the test which was not on the quiz, so you cannot simply abandon the rest of the material while learning and expect a good grade overall.Slide5

Practice quizzes are often posted before the quiz.

Sometimes this means the night before the quiz.

I do not promise this will always occur, but it will happen often enough.

Even if you do not make time to look at it, printing it and

bringing it with you can be a convenience.Slide6

The 3rd

Harbinger

Sometimes I will deliberately avoid saying a particular thing directly regarding the quiz, but I will instead draw (not very) subtle attention to it.

“I repeat <insert repetition of what I just said>. I probably just repeated that for no particular reason.”

“For example, on your upcoming quiz, I might possibly <thing that is virtually guaranteed to happen on the quiz>”

“Wink.”Slide7

Some Video Game History

This is super relevant to quizzes and testsSlide8

On the Un-de-humanization of the Younger Mario Brother

In 1983 a game was released which many of you have probably never heard of.

Mario Brothers.

But wait…you’ve heard of that game?

Maybe.

Chances are you’ve only heard of Super Mario Brothers (released 1985).

Mario brothers was a whole game which is pretty much like the POW stage of Super Mario Brothers 3.

In fact the POW stage was designed as a throwback to the original game.Slide9

On the Un-de-humanization of the Younger Mario Brother

In the 1983 game there was something amazing at the time going on.

Video games had recently begun incorporating the possibility of simultaneous two player gameplay.

Player 2 was named Luigi, but because of how much effort was required to make simultaneous two player gameplay, there simply wasn’t time to make Luigi special.

He was just a palette swap of Mario.

He was just…Green Mario.

On the Un-de-humanization of the Younger Mario Brother

In the 1985 game Super Mario Brothers, Luigi was still just a palette swap of Mario, even though there was no longer simultaneous two player gameplay.

In Nintendo’s defense, there was now something better. There were video game stages that were multiple orders of magnitude more complicated than anything that was seen before.

But still our beloved Luigi was only Green Mario.

Slide11

On the Un-de-humanization of the Younger Mario Brother

Finally, in Super Mario Brothers 2 the character of Luigi had different attributes, although he did not have a different appearance.

Of course, we Americans did not know about it yet because the game was deemed too difficult us.

We did get a game called Super Mario Brothers 2 and in it Luigi had different attributes and a different appearance than Mario.

This game was known as Super Mario Brothers USA in Japan.

The original Super Mario Brothers 2 can be played as part of the game Super Mario Brothers All Stars.Slide12

Green Mario

I will sometimes refer to a quiz as being “green Mario” and that means that it is just the same questions with either a different term it could have used (such as a different question word) or else I changed the numbers (for the

mathy

questions we will eventually have some of).

As a fun side note for you linguists out there, apparently the Japanese word “

ruiji

” (which is how some speakers of Japanese would be inclined to pronounce Luigi) actually means “similar”.

So, if you hear me using “green Mario” and “

ruigi

” interchangeably, I am not mocking anything, but am actually using a word from a foreign language properly on purpose.
