What about my results? Before you leave you will be told how

you will nd out the results of your examination. The information and scans are sent to specialists who report the DXA scans, this report will then be sent to the person who requested for you to have the scan.We cannot give you any results on the day of your scan.Further InformationIf you have any questions about the procedure, please contact us on 01253 957010. Our receptionist will either help with your questions or get a DXA radiographer to phone you back.If your query is to rearrange your appointment please contact the Radiology Appointments ofce on 01253 956789. What will happen when I come for my scan? You will book in at X-ray reception and wait in the waiting room for your appointment. One of our DXA team

will come and collect you.You will be shown to a changing cubicle and asked to remove all clothing except shoes, socks and underwear; these must not have any metal/plastic fasteners. You will be given a gown to wear and a basket to put your belongings in and keep with you whilst you are in the department. We will need you to remove navel piercings and avoid wearing underwear with buttons or metal decorations. One of the DXA team will show you to the scan room where you will be weighed and your height measured, this information is entered into the scan computer when it assesses your bone density. We will then go through the questionnaire with you to ensure we have all the information required for the scan. You will be asked to

remove your shoes, get onto the scanner and lie on your back. You will then be positioned for the scans.Once the scans have been completed and checked you will be shown back to the cubicle where you can dress and go. There are no after effects from the scan. What do I need to do before I come?A questionnaire has been sent with your appointment letter. It is very important that this is completed before you attend for your appointment. This questionnaire ensures we have all the information required to assess the strength of your bones. There are certain illnesses and medications that can affect your bones, it is important we have all this information to pass on to the person who will study your scan results. We therefore ask t

hat you bring a list of your tablets or a prescription sheet. If applicable, you will be asked the date of your last menstrual period; if your period date is over due please contact the department before your appointment. Please contact us to discuss your appointment if:You need a translator to communicate. We may ask questions which are personal to you, that a friend or family member cannot translate for you.You have any mobility, moving or handling issues that may make climbing on to the scan table or lying on your back difcult. You have any questions, or want to share any information with us before to your appointment.PLEASE NOTE: If you require a hoist for transferring, you must contact us before your appointment. Ho

w is the scan performed? You will be asked to climb onto the scan couch and lie on your back. The scanner will pass over your hips and lower back. You will need to lie still for about 2-3 minutes for each scan. The whole examination takes up to 25 minutes in total. What is a DXA scan? Please note that this scan is only performed at Clifton HospitalA DXA scan is used to measure the density or strength of bone. It is mainly used to diagnose osteoporosis (loss of bone material) and to assess your risk of having a fracture. Generally the more dense the bone, the stronger it is and less likely it is to break.A DXA scan is not like a CT, MRI, Isotope or Ultrasound scan and does not involve an injection or going through a tunnel. How

does a DXA scanner work? The scanner uses low dose x-rays at two different energies. These x-rays pass through the bone. If the bone is weak, more x-rays pass through than if it is strong.A sensor in the scanner measures these x-rays and this information is interpreted by the scan computer to calculate the strength of the bone.Although this test uses x-rays, the actual dose to patients is very small.
