Background on 1984
The story takes place in what was once England, but is now Airstrip One in Oceania, with a government that alters both the past and the present, as well as suppresses all individuality in order to maintain power over it’s people.
Any original thought not administered by the Ministry of Truth, Love, or Peace, is immediately a THOUGHT CRIME, and THOUGHT CRIMMINALS are worse than prostitutes, the enjoyment of sex, and the love of someone other than Big Brother.
There are no laws in Oceania, just the knowledge that one must use doublethink (the thought process in which one defies logic or reason to agree with party views) or become vaporized.
The Ministry of Truth is attempting to eliminate the possibility of rebellion by erasing rebellious words from the language. This new language that they are forming is NEWSPEAK.
Emmanuel Goldstein is a figure which the ministries use to enforce the hatred of thought crime and rebellion.Slide4
Opening
Smith has memories that disagree with the truth that Oceania puts out there. Smith believes O’Brian to be on his side, and the dark haired girl to be part of the thought police.Smith has purchased a diary from an antique’s shop, and has written his criminal thoughts within it. Smith remembers a dream voice of O’Brian’s saying “We shall meet in the place with no darkness.”
The dark haired girl writes Smith a note saying “I love you.” And their rebellion ensues. Slide5
Middle
Winston Smith recalls his last sex act with a Prole Prostitute and writes it in his diary.Winston buys a glass paper weight with a coral piece inside.Smith begins sexual affair with Julia starting in the Golden Country.
Then they have sex in the bell tower of a church.
Finally they settle down in Weeks, which is owned by Mr.
Charrington
.
O’Brian lures them in with Goldstein’s book, and the idea of a rebellion. Slide6
Symbolism
The glass paper weight with the coral in the middle is symbolic of a world where nothing can get to your insides. This was important to Smith, because he felt that in the room where he canoodled with Julia was safe from all government interference. Slide7
End:Slide8
Theme
You are always being watched.Even when you think you are alone and that no one can find out what you are doing, there will always be someone who can see you and knows what you are doing. There is no where in the world you are safe when the government has the right to spy on you.Slide9
