Who was John Keats?

John Keats was born on October 31, 1795 to Thomas and Frances Keats. He was the fourth child and the oldest of his siblings. Tragically his father died when he was eight years old, after being trampled by a horse. After the death of his father the family struggled financially to the point where John’s mother re-married and lost a big portion of their money. She left them in the care of her mom, after the second marriage was unsuccessful. She later returned but died of tuberculosis the same disease that claimed John’s life.

During this time John found peace and tranquility in literature.

John became aware of the human state that included suffering and loss. This would later be the base of where John’s later poetry surfaced Slide3

The Road To Poetry

While attending Enfield Academy, his professor's all agreed Keats’ was a fierce reader. John became close to the headmaster John Clarke, he encouraged Keats’ to continue reading and studying literature.

Unfortunately

J

ohn left school to pursue a career being a surgeon. Its still unknown who persuaded him to leave but eventually his surgeon career ended when Johns love for literature continued.

Keats eventually met Leigh Hunt of

T

he Examiner, Hunt saw talent in Keats’ and became his first publisher. Leigh Hunt also introduced Keats’ to English poets Percy Bysshe Shelley and Williams Wordsworth

Although his first published poems received lots of criticism stating, “it was hard to follow”. Rumors have it that the criticism had such an affect oh John that it affected his health. Slide4

“Isabella”

Or the Pot of Basil (1818) is a poem about a woman who's family has chosen to wed her to wealthy man. She falls in love for another man her family doesn't’

t approve of. The man she falls in love with gets murdered. She later finds out he has been murdered because he visits her in her dreams she then finds his body and takes his head to bury in a pot of basil. Creepy! She obsesses over the plant and is always watering and holding it. Slide5

A thing of Beauty

Most beautiful Poem I've read. This poem is about beauty and how beauty brings joy, happiness, and love. When remembered it increases our joy. Must read for yourselves!Slide6
