Title: The 3 Little Dassies by Jan Brett Subject: ELA Time: 9:15 - 10:15 Date: 5 - 3 - 13 Standards:  2.RL.9: Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story by different authors or from different cultures. Objectives:  Students will be able to compare and contrast between two versions of The Three Little Pigs.  Students will use a graphic organizer to write down their thoughts about how the houses in the stories are built.  Students will write about their favorite house and why it is their favori te. Materials:  The 3 Little Dassies by Jan Brett  The 3 pigs graphic organizer  Picture a dassie  Picture of a Agama man lizard Procedures: 1. Start by asking the children to retell the version of the three little pigs from last week; The Three Pigs by David Wei sner a. How did the pigs use problem - solving in this story? b. What were the fairy tale elements in this story? c. What were the characters in this story? d. Who helped the pigs conquer the wolf? Or who helped the pigs scare the wolf? 2. Now ask the children what they th ink a dassy is? a. A dassy is a kind of rabbit that lives in Africa. They like to live in safe places away from big birds. Show the children an actual picture of a dassy. 3. What do you think these dassies will make their homes out of? a. Ask a few children before reading the story to predict what will happen? 4. What kind of animal do you think our “wolf” will be in this story? a. Ask a few children before reading the story to predict? 5. Tell the children to pay close attention to what the dassies build their homes out of . a. Every time we see a new home, I would like you to put your finger on your nose. 6. Also, I would like you to pay close attention to the pictures in this story. a. Look for clues, to what might happen next. 7. Pg. 6 What do you think driftwood is? 8. Why do you thi nk the lizard , Agama Man, is in this story? 9. What do you think the Eagle will do to the dassies? 10. What does it seem like Agama Man is doing in our story? a. How can you tell? 11. How is this version of the three little pigs different from the one we read last week? a. Start a list on the board b. What were the houses made of in The Three Pigs ? c. What were the houses made of in The Three Little Dassies? d. Turn to a neighbor and discuss this for a minute. 12. Now, after discussing what the houses were made of have the children go back to their seats. 13. Have the paper passer hand out the graphic organizer. 14. Use the document viewer to project the sheet on the board. 15. Have children pull out their crayons and pencils. 16. Then do the sheet together step by step. 17. Have children illustrate them selves with your guidance when needed. 18. As a closure, have children talk with you about their favorite version and favorite house that was built in these two fairy tales.
