Sugarhill GangSlide2

I said a hip hop a hippie to the hippie

To the hip, hip hop, you don’t stop

A rockin’ to the bang bang boogie say upchuck the boogie

To the rhythm of the boogity beat

now what you hear is not a test--I'm rappin’ to the beat

and me, the groove, and my friends are gonna try to move your feet

see I am wonder mike and I like to say hello

to the black, to the white, the red, and the brown, the purple and yellow

but first I gotta bang bang the boogie to the boogie

say up jump the boogie to the bang bang boogie

let's rock, you don’t stop

rock the riddle that will make your body rock

well so far you’ve heard my voice but I brought two friends along

and next on the mike is my man hank

come on, Hank, sing that song Slide3

Check it out, I'm the

C-a-s-an-the-o-v-a

and the rest is f-l-y

ya see I go by the code of the doctor of the mix

and these reasons I'll tell ya why

ya see I'm six foot one and I'm tons of fun

and I dress to a t

ya see I got more clothes than

Muhammad Ali

and I dress so viciously

I got bodyguards, I got two big cars

that definitely ain’t the whack

I got a Lincoln continental and a sunroof Cadillac

so after school, I take a dip in the pool

which really is on the wall

I got a color TV so I can see

the Knicks play basketball

hear me talkin’ bout checkbooks, credit cards

more money than a sucker could ever spend

but I wouldn’t give a sucker or a bum from the Rucker

not a dime till I made it again

ya go hotel motel what’cha gonna do today (say what)

ya say I’m gonna get a fly girl gonna get some spankin’

drive off in a def OJ

everybody go, hotel motel holiday inn

say if your girl starts actin’ up, then you take her friend

master gee, am I mellow

It’s on you so what you gonna do Slide4

Well it's on n on n on n onthe beat don’t stop until the break of dawn

I said m-a-s, t-e-r, a g with a double “e”

I said I go by the unforgettable name

of the man they call the

Master Gee

well, my name is known all over the world

by all the foxy ladies and the pretty girls

I'm going’ down in historySlide5

We're treacherous trio, we're the serious joint

a from sun to sun and from day to day

I sit down and write a brand new rhyme

because they say that miracles never cease

I've created a devastating masterpiece

I'm gonna rock the mike ‘til you cant resist

everybody, I say it goes like thiswell I was coming home late one dark afternoona reporter stopped me for a interviewshe said she's heard stories and she's heard fablesthat I'm vicious on the mike and the turntablesthis young reporter I did adoreso I rocked a vicious I’m rhyme like I never did beforeshe said damn fly guy in love with youthe Casanova legend must have been trueI said by the way baby what's your namesaid I go by the name of Lois Laneand you could be my boyfriend you surely canjust let me quit my boyfriend called SupermanI said he's a fairy I do supposeflyin’ through the air in pantyhosehe may be very sexy or even cutebut he looks like a sucker in a blue and red suitI said you need a man who's got finesseand his whole name across his chesthe may be able to fly all through the night

and let me tell ya something we're a helluva crew

once a week we're on the street

just a-cuttin' the jams and making it free

for you to party ya got to have the movies

so we'll get right down and give you the groove

for you to dance you gotta get hype

so we'll get right down for you tonight

now the system's on and the girls are there

ya definitely have a rockin affair

but let me tell ya something there's still one fact

that to have a party ya got to have a rap

so when the party's over you're making it home

and trying to sleep before the break of dawn

and while ya sleeping ya start to dream

and thinking how ya danced on the disco scene

my name appears in your mind

yeah, a name you know that was right on time

it was phase two just a doing a do

rockin ya down cause ya know we could

to the rhythm of the beat that makes ya freakSlide7

Sugarhill Gang

The Sugarhill Gang is famous for creating the first ever hip hop single, « Rapper’s Delight ». The producer Sylvia Robinson created this group, bringing together Wonder Mike, Master Gee, and Big Bank Hank. These three were pioneers in the early rapping community, when hip hop was just beginning. “Rapper’s Delight” sky-rocketed hip hop music and culture. The song was very popular, and sold over two million copies. If you look at rap’s history, you’ll see that “Rapper’s Delight” wasn’t actually the first rap record ever; it was, however, the big jumping off point. Now, rap and hip hop are two of the most listened to genres of music, first made popular by this song. For more information on their effect on hip hop:

BackSlide14

Giacomo Casanova Giacomo Casanova was an author and adventurer in the 18

th

century. Most people have heard Casanova’s name, often used nowadays to be synonymous with “womanizer”. In fact, that is the way his name is used in this song; the rapper is calling himself a man of seduction.

This is actually a double reference because Hank borrowed rhymes from a guy who went by Caz- short for Casanova, and this was his way of paying homage to that man.

Master Gee Unlike most other types of music, rap songs make references to the actual rappers themselves. This technique is seen several times through out this song, and it makes it seem much more casual.

The literary device here is an allusion; this means that there is a reference to something.

BACKSlide17

AABBCC Rhyme Scheme Rhyming is a popular literary technique in poems and songs, especially this specific rhyme scheme. It is used several times throughout this song, along with some other rhyme schemes. A helpful website if you’re trying to come up with rhymes is:

BACKSlide18

Anaphora Anaphora is the use of repetition. It occurs when the same word or phrase repeats over and over again.

BACKSlide19

Metaphor The metaphor, “he’s a fairy” is sometimes used to imply that someone is homosexual. This is derogatory, and is often seen as offensive. This song seems to be one of those cases.

BACKSlide20

Joint-First Person This whole song is written in first person, swapping narration between three people. This is seen by the use of the pronouns “me” and “I”. The narrator is announced throughout the song.
