Why technology in physical education? It gives a chance for the students who are not athletic to participate with confidence. It allows students to have a different approach to physical education class instead of just the traditional physical education class.

Some students prefer video games over physical activity. Using video games like just dance will have them moving without realizing what they are actually doing.Slide5

ContinuedHaving students participate more will lead to healthy lifestyles.Students will work on their self esteem and their social life by using technology in the classroom. They will be able to interact with other students to help one another. There has always been a lack of student involvement in school so bringing technology into physical education could help the involvement rate.Slide6

EXERgaming

Exergaming

” is when you use video games to trigger exercise. is the latest trend in physical education programs, as educators try to get a broader range of students to exercise more regularly and rigorously

.

The University of South Florida’s

XRKade

Research Lab studies the impact of technology-based interactive game activities on children’s physical activities and fitness levels.

The lab showed that elementary students rather do

exergaming

than traditional physical education.

The study showed that

exergaming

made the student’s heart rates higher than traditional exercises.

Just Dance & Dance Dance RevolutionJust Dance is for the wii and xbox. You need to use a controller. You dance the same way the character dances on the screen while holding the remote. They have different difficulties depending on the song.

Dance

Dance

Revolution is on

playstation. You need to use a controller pad to dance on. You need to step on the arrows on the pad as they appear on the screen. They have different difficulties depending on the song. Dancing is a great way to exercise. You are working out and having fun at the same time!Slide9

Youtube videosYouTube is a great tool for any classroom. If the game systems are too expensive schools can use a YouTube video of the games like just dance and project it onto the screen or wall. All that’s need is a laptop and projector.Instead of students using a controller they can just follow along with the video. Slide10

Game BikeThe way to play Game Bike is by sitting on the stationary bike and pedal. Students are so involved in playing the game and having fun they don’t realize they are pedaling and exercising. Game Bike comes with a bunch of different games like racing games.Slide11

iPods and ipadsIt has been proven that iPod ‘sand iPad's help children with memory issues such as things related to rhyming and patterns. Using these could benefit students in all aspects of learning in every subject.Students love getting to use technology so using apps on iPod’s and

iPad's

is a great tool to use. The app store has a million of different apps to use not just for physical education but for every subject.Slide12

Polar GoFItPolar go fit is a website where you can track your students physical activity. They need to use a wristband/watch that are available for purchase. The wristband/watch automatically will upload the information onto the site under your account. The wristband/watch can be expensive but it’s a good buy and it allows students, parents, and teachers to know their progress.

PedometersFrom experience when students use pedometers they get excited to use it because they love watching their number go up. They love seeing who got the highest number out of their friends.Pedometers encourage students to be active because it’s the only way they can see their number go up. It helps them be aware that just by walking a short distance you take a lot of steps.Slide15

Using pedometers will tie in other subjects such as math. Using technology to tie in two different subjects into one is a great idea. It makes learning fun for both subjects.Teachers can use pedometers when having the students play a game or even use it for jumping rope. If they jump rope you can have them count how many times they jump and what number came up on the pedometer.

Heart rate monitorsHeart rate monitors help students learn how to exercise safely. The monitor shows students what their rate should be at rest as well as what it should be during physical activity. It also helps them learn to either maintain their weight or lose weight.

They have many different kinds of monitors to choose from.Slide17

Data from heart rate monitorsThe data from some heart rate monitors can be sent to a computer program or set to a website. The data can be seen by students, teachers, and parents to analyze their results. The data also will allow students to improve their workouts and their outcomes.Slide18

Costs for a few things

Projectors range from $200 and up.

Laptops range from $200 and up.

Pedometers range from $4 to $20.

Heart Rate Monitors starting at $20iPods & iPads starting at $199Game systems are around $200.Games for the systems range from $20 to $40.Apps for iphones and ipad can range from free to $4.99.Smart Boards range from $1,200 and up.

How can we afford these things? Many states offer grants for schools who have a good idea and a set plan on how they could use the money.Schools are given money each year and distribute it how they feel is needed. That money could be used to buy some of these items. The school could hold a fundraiser to raise money for the items.Slide20

All of these things I discussed are ways to help motivate students who love physical education and the students who usually don’t participate. These fun things to use in the physical education setting will help prevent childhood obesity.I believe if each school system puts out a little money every year towards these items there will be a huge turn around in physical education involvement.
