BKD Proverbs Lesson 8 Page 1 of 2 The Study of Proverbs 6:1 - 19 In this chapter , verse 23 could be considered a key verse. “ For the commandment is a lamp, a nd the law a light; r eproofs of instruction are the way of life.” Commandment, law, and instruction all describe God’s word. The “repr oofs of instruction are a way of life” and we see several reproofs in this chapter. II Timothy 3:16 says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” W e see that one of the very purposes for scripture is to bring reproof in our lives. This reproof has a purpose… “ that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” The reproofs in Proverbs 6 will help us if we heed them. These first t wo sections deal with money. 1. How we might misuse it and lose it. 2. How we might never work for it and never have it. Warning Against Financial Bondage 1 - 5 The Pitfall (1 - 2) Solomon is speaking here against overextending your financial resources. This is not about generosity but irresponsibility as a steward of God’s blessings. The Deliverance (3 - 5) The word “deliver” is used twice in these verses. The picture painted here is one quickly going to your friend before the arrangement goes to the creditor and try to be released from the promise. This is a hard thing and may strain the friendship. But going sooner rather than later is the best hope at resolving it. Warning Against Laziness 6 - 11 Learn from Nature ( 6 - 8 ) The s luggard (lazy person) is told to learn from the ant. The ant shows self discipline (7) in providing her supplies and food (8). Learn before it s too late ( 9 - 11 ) The sluggard’s problem seems to center around excessive sleep (9 - 10). Solomon asks “how long will you slumber?” (9) The sluggar d justifies his sleep (10) but Solomon says it will bring poverty and need (11). Warning Against the Wicked Man 12 - 1 9 The Activities of the Wicked Man 12 - 15 Look at all that is u sed in worthless (scoundrel) and wicked man: His mouth (12), his eyes (13a), his feet (13b), his fingers (13c), and his heart (14). A wink with the eye may have meant that he says one thing but means another. His word cannot be trusted. This man’s body language betrays his words and shows a different/wicked intent. The Lord sees a nd knows the intent of the heart (14) and he will suffer calamity and brokenness (15). BKD Proverbs Lesson 8 Page 2 of 2 The Activities the Lord Hates 16 - 19 God stands starkly against that which is wrong and sinful. Of course the Bible teaches us that He deals with patience, compassion, and mercy, even to the sinful man. Solomon lists six things, yes seven that He hates (16). This expression shows us the list is not exhaustive. He lists: * Pride or a proud look (17a). We use the expression of “looking down ones nose” at others. God is loo king for humility. * A lying tongue (17b). God only wants truth. * Hands that shed innocent blood (17c). God cares for the innocent. * Heart that devises wicked plans (18a). God wants a heart seeking righteousness. * Feet that are swift in running to evil (18b). God wants peacemakers. * A false witness speaking lies (19a). God wants honest witnesses. * One who sows discord among brethren (19b). God wants unity among His people.
