Moscow, the capital of the Russian Federation, is rich in places of interest. The most famous are: The Kremlin, Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Tretyakov Gallery, the History Museum, the Bolshoi Theatre. And also our capital has many interesting monuments. You can see them in different parts of the city. There are monuments to: I. FAMOUS PEOPLE II. FILMSTARS III. LITERARY CHARACTERS

The monument to Minin and Pozharsky The monument to the leaders of the second volunteer corps during Polish intervention in 1612 when Russian people won victory over Poland was created by sculptor Ivan Martos and opened on 4th March, 1818. It is located in front of St. Basil’s Cathedral in Red Square.

The Monument to Peter the Great Peter I was Russian Tsar in the years 1682-1725. The m onument was opened in 1997 to mark the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy on an artificial island, where the Moskva River and the Obvodnoy (Bypass) channel meet. The total height of the monument is 98 meters ; it is the highest in Russia and one of the highest sculptural monuments in the world

The Monument to Catherine II Catherine the Great was the Russian Empress in 1762-1796. The monument was created by famous Russian sculptor Aleksandr Opekushin and opened on 6th November 1896. It is located in “Tsaritsino ”

The Monument to A.V.Suvorov The monument to the greatest Russian commander and generalissimo was opened in Moscow in Suvorov Square in 1982. The country selebrated the 250 th anniversary of his birthday.

The Monument to A.S. Pushkin The greatest Russian poet was born in 1799 and died in 1837. Now his name is famous all over the world. The monument was created by famous Russian sculptor Aleksandr Opekushin and opened in 1880. It is located in Pushkin Square.

The Monument to L.N. Tolstoy Leo Tolstoy monument was erected in the square Devichye Pole (Maiden’s field ) in 1928. The great Russian writer is one of the most outstanding writers, educators and thinkers in the world . He was the member of the defense of Sevastopol.

The Monument to F.M. Dostoevsky The outstanding Russian writer was born in 1821 and died in 1881. His name is well-known all over the world. His books are translated into many languages.The monument was created by Russian sculptor Aleksandr Rukavishnikov and opened in 1997 before celebration of 850 anniversary of Moscow. It is located at the building of the Russian State Library.

The Monument to Sergei Esenin The monument to the talented Russian poet and publicist was opened in Moscow in 1995 in the Tverskoy Boulevard. Esenin’s poems are still very popular among both grown-ups and young people. Many of them became favourite songs for Russian people.

The Monument to V.S. Vysotsky The monument was created by sculptor Gennady Raspopov and opened on 25th July, 1995 on the 15 th anniversary since the death of the most favourite and popular actor and bard. It is located in Strastnoy Boulevard.

The Monument to N.I.Pirogov The monument to the famous Russian doctor Nikolai Ivanovich Pirogov , the founder of field surgery, anatom, talented surgeon , a member of the Petersburg Science Academy, was opened on 3rd August, 1897 . He became the professor at the age of 26.

The Monument to Fridtjof Nansen Fridtjof Nansen (1861—1930), the Norwegian Arctic researcher, talented scientist, founder of a new science – physical Oceanography ,politician, humanist, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 1922. He gave Prize money to support agriculture of the USSR and Greek refugees. The monument was opened on 18 th September 2002. It is located in Bolshoy Levshinsky Lane , in front of the house of Moscow city Red Cross committee. 

The Monument to E.F. Gnesina The monument was opened in 2004 in honour of 130th birthday of Elena Fabianovna Gnesina (1874-1967), the pianist and the teacher at Russian music academy . It is located in Malyi Rzhevsky Lane.

Monuments to Filmstars in the image of their filmcharactors The monument to Vasily Lanovoy and Vitaly Solomin in the image of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Vatson was opened in 2007 in S molenskaya Embankment next to the British embassy . The monument to the heroes of the film “The Officers ” was opened in 2013 in Frunzenskaya Embankment. Vasily Lanovoy , Georgy Yumatov and Alina Pokrovskaya in the image of Ivan Varavva , Aleksey and Lyubov Trofimovs .

Monuments to Filmstars in the image of their filmcharactors The monument to the talented clown and actor Yury Nikulin is one of the most famous in Moscow. It was opened in 2000 next to the building of Yury Nikulin’s Circus in Tsvetnoy Boulevard. The monument to Evgeny Leonov in the image of Dotsent from the film “Gentlemen of Fortune” in Mosfilm Street.

Monuments to the Literary Heroes The monument shows famous narrator Baron Munchausen , which pulls the bridle horse. It is next to the Metro Station “Molodyozhnaya ”. The monument to Nasreddin Hodja and his faithful donkey. This folklore character is loved by many in the Muslim East. It is next to the Metro Station “Arbatskaya”.

Monuments to the Literary Heroes The monument to Master and Margarita from the novel "The Master and Margarita“ by Bulgakov . It is next to the Metro Station “ Arbatskaya”.The monument to Korovyev and Cat Begemot from the novel "The Master and Margarita“ by Bulgakov . It is next to the Metro Station “ Maryina Roshcha ”.

Monuments to the Literary Heroes July 1, 2012 in Sokolniki Park there was a children's festival dedicated to Moidodyr . The main event of the festival was the opening of the monument to the character of the famous fairy tale by Korney Chukovsky. It is next to the Metro Station The bronze giant stands on a small pedestal above the ground. It is as high as three meters. You can see t he monument to Uncle Styopa in front of the Traffic P olice Department of the Moscow region .
