b) Compounds

Specific

Aim : To appreciate the idea pure substances, to know about Elements and

Compounds to

be able to identify both Elements and compounds present around us, to know

about Periodic

Table.

Some Questions and Answers

Question

:

If I break a Chalk Pencil, what do I get?

Answer:

I get few pieces of Chalk.

Question

:

If I take a piece of Chalk pencil and keep on breaking it, eventually what do I get?

Answer:

I get the Chalk powder.

Question

:

Can I further break the particles of Chalk powders?

Answer:

Yes. The Small particles are called Atom

O is formula of water.

Slide4

Introduction

You know cadets;

All substances are made of some tiny particles

Different substances have different types of particles.

Today, we shall discuss about What are Elements and Compounds?

Slide5

Elements and Compounds

Elements:

An Element is a simple substance that cannot be broken be broken down to simpler substances.

There are 118 elements found on the Earth.

Examples: Hydrogen, Helium, Lithium, Beryllium, Boron, Carbon, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Fluorine, Neon etc

.

Compounds:

When two or more elements combine chemically, they form Compounds.

Carbon(C) and Oxygen (O) combine chemically to form carbon-di-Oxide (CO

2

).

C + O

CO

Hydrogen (H) and Oxygen (O) combine chemically to form Water (H

Properties of Elements and Compounds

Properties of Elements and Compounds:

Each element has certain specific properties. The properties change when the elements combine chemically

Hydrogen (H) and Oxygen (O) combine chemically to form Water (H

Both

Hydrogen and Oxygen are

Colurless

,

Odourless

gases.

Oxygen supports combustion, but it does not burn.

Hydrogen can burn but it does not help others to burn.

Water, the compound formed by them, is a

colourless

,

Odourless

liquid that neither burns nor allows other substances to burn. We can use water to put out fire.
