Largest and most populous of Greek Islands

KingMinos

Son of Zeus and human princess, Europa

Her beauty inspired the love of Zeus

Zeus, to protect her from his jealous wife, Hera, takes her from her home in Phoenicia comes to her in the form of a white bull to further throw Hera off his trail

Europa bears three sons for Zeus Minos,

Rhadamanthys

, and

Sarpedon

Europa marries

Asterius

, King of Crete, who adopts her sons

Slide3

Background

When King

Asterius

died, Minos declared himself king

Claimed it was “the will of the Gods”

as proof, he sacrificed a bull to honor

Posiedon

and asked

Posiedon

to send him another bull to sacrifice to prove he should be king

Poseidon was pleased and sent an all white bull from the sea

Minos and the people thought the bull was too beautiful to sacrifice, so he let it free and killed another instead

Minos marries Pasiphae

Daughter of the Sun god, Helios

Together they have many children

 Ariadne, Phaedra,

Glaucus

, and

Androgeus

Poseidon finds out Minos never sacrificed the white bull he sent he makes Pasiphae fall in love with the bull

The result of the union of the bull and Queen Pasiphae is THE MINOTAUR

Slide4

The Minotaur and the Labryinth

When Minos sees the creature his wife gives birth to, he immediately orders Daedalus, the sculptor and engineer, to build a labyrinth with unlimited corridors and cells to imprison the Minotaur.

Minos also imprisons his enemies in the

Labryinth

as food for the Minotaur.

The Labyrinth was so complicated that no one ever found their way out

Slide5

The Labyrinth and Theseus

After Minos’ son,

Androgeus

, is killed in Athens, Minos wages war on Athens and wins

As tribute he demands that Athens send 7 men and 7 women yearly as sacrifices to the Minotaur in the Labyrinth

In the third year of sacrifices, Theseus volunteers in order to kill the Minotaur

Theseus announces to Minos he will kill the Minotaur

 Minos isn’t worried because he doesn’t believe Theseus will find his way out

Slide6

Theseus and the Labyrinth

Before entering the Labyrinth, Theseus meets Princess Ariadne, who falls in love with him and decides to help him

Ariadne gives him thread and tells him to unravel it as he goes through the labyrinth

Theseus kills the Minotaur, saves Athens from the sacrifice, and sails back to Athens with Ariadne

Theseus leaves the princess on the island of Naxos on the way home
