Bodhichitta Kadampa Buddhist Centre www.meditateinvictoria.com Founder : Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Resident Teacher: Gen Kelsang Zopa _________________________________________________________ Powa Ceremony Transference of consciousness fo r the deceased The practice of transference of consciousness, known as ‘ powa ’ , can be done either by a group of practitioners or individually. The purpose of doing this is to le ad countless deceased beings to the Pure Land of a Buddha. We understand that throughout this world millions of humans and billions of animals die every day from so many different causes. If these living beings have the oppo rtunity to take rebirth in a Buddha ’ s Pure Land, they will attain permanent liberation from suffering and experience pure and everlasting happiness. Our p ractice of this powa offers them this precious opportunity. By engaging in thi s practice we ourself will create a grea t collection of virtue, which will also lead us into the pathway to the P u re Land of a Buddha. We perform this powa practice on behalf of those who have recently died, traditionally within forty - nine days of t heir death. You may arrange beautiful offerings such as flowers and candles . If are including a special person (human or animal) , you may arrange a picture of them in front of you as well. A beautiful picture of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion , will be on the screen throughout. We will perform the ceremony with compassion for all the deceased in t he world. The stages of the ceremony are: 1. On behalf of the deceased, we accumulate a great collection of virtue and merit. We do this by (mentally) making prostrations and extensive offerings to the holy beings, so that the deceased gather the necessary conditions for rebirth in the Pure Land of a Buddha. 2. On behalf of the deceased, by sincerely making requests to Buddha Vajrasattva with the recitation of his mantra, we purify the ir main obstacles to taking rebirth in the Pure Land of a Buddha. (There will be a 5 minute silence for recitation of the mantra here. You may recite either of the mantras inclu ded below) 3. Through the powe r of our compassionate intention, strong prayer, and concentration on the practice, we transfer the consciousness of the deceased to the Pure Land of the Buddha of Compassion, so that they will experience pure and everlasting happiness. (There will be another 5 minute silence here for allow time to meditate on the actual transference of consciousness . ) 4. Through the power of our concentration on the end o f contaminated rebirth for a ll t he deceased, we recite Avalokite shvara ’ s mantra together and create a special auspiciousness for the deceased to attain permanent liberation from samsaric rebirth.
