How Batman began

The character was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27, in May 1939. Batman was originally known as ‘the Bat-Man’.Batman is now known by many names, such as ‘the Caped Crusader’, ‘the Dark Knight’, and ‘the world’s Greatest Detective’.

Batman is the secret identity of Bruce Wayne, who is an American billionaire, industrialist, and philanthropist.

After witnessing the murder of his parents, Bruce swore revenge on Gotham City’s criminals, bringing justice to the city.

Batman has many supporting characters, such as his butler Alfred Pennyworth, his sidekick Robin, police commissioner Jim Gordon, and sometimes Batgirl. Slide4

The Comics

Like all Superheroes, Batman originated in comic books. After the success of Superman in the late 1930’s, there was a higher demand for superheroes. This was the time Batman was born. The costume that Batman wore changed throughout his first appearances in DC comics, with artist Bob Kane saying he made Batman’s jawline more pronounced, and he lengthened the ears on the costume.

Batman proved to be a hit with comic book fans, and ended up with his own solo title in 1940, called ‘Batman’, while still featuring in the Detective Comics.

After the war, DC Comics adopted a new editorial approach, and this stripped away the bleak and menacing world, and replaced it with a bright and colourful one. Batman was now portrayed as a respectable citizen.

Batman was one of very few superhero characters that was continuously published throughout the 1950’s as the genre dampened down.

Batman came under huge criticism when Fredric Wertham’s book, Seduction of the Innocent’, published in 1954, claimed children imitated crimes committed in comic books. In the late 1950’s, Batman stories became more science fiction-oriented, with Batman fighting aliens or having bizarre transformations. Slide5

Batman Comics Revamped

By 1964, sales on Batman comic titles had fallen incredibly low, and DC was planning on killing Batman off altogether’. In response, editor Julius Schwartz was assigned to Batman to overhaul the character. The

was redesigned, and Batman’s costume was modified to incorporate a yellow ellipse behind the Bat symbol.

All of the science fiction, such as aliens and time travel, were retired.

Batwoman, Ac, and Bat-Mite were also retired. Bruce’s butler, Alfred, was also killed off but that decision was later reversed.Slide6

Batman in Movies

Batman first appeared in two serial films in the 1940’s, called ‘Batman’ and ‘Batman and Robin’.The 1966 film, ‘Batman’, was a feature film adaption of the 1960’s Batman TV series featuring Adam West and Burt Ward.

Warner Bro’s began producing a series of Batman films in the 1980’s, beginning with the 1989 film ‘Batman’, which was directed by Tim Burton, and had Michael Keaton as Batman.

In 1992 ‘Batman Returns’ was released, with Burton and Keaton returning for what proved to be their final Batman film.

In 1995, ‘Batman Forever’ was released, and this time it was directed by Joel Schumacher and starred Val Kilmer as Batman.

Schumacher returned to direct the 1997 sequel, ‘Batman & Robin’, with George Clooney starring as Batman. This film was widely criticised by fans and critics, and signalled the end of the flurry of Batman films. Slide7

The Batman film franchise rebooted

After the complete flop of ‘Batman & Robin’ in 1997, interest in Batman films subsided until Christopher Nolan took the reigns. In 2005, ‘Batman Begins’ was released, which starred Christian Bale as Batman, with Christopher Nolan directing. This would be the first film in a trilogy that would ultimately save Batman in film. The film grossed over $374 million worldwide.

‘The Dark Knight’ was released in 2008, with Nolan and Bale returning to reprise their roles again. This film proved to be the game changer for the Batman film franchise. Heath Ledger’s portrayal of Batman’s villain ‘The Joker’ is widely considered to be one of the best acting performances of a villain in a movie to date. This film grossed over $1 billion worldwide, won eight academy award nominations, with Heath Ledger winning best supporting actor.

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ was released in 2012, with Nolan and Bale returning to reprise their roles for the final time. The film grossed over $1.08 billion worldwide, out grossing its predecessor. Tom Hardy took on the role of Batman’s villain ‘Bane’ for the film, with Anne Hathaway also starring as a cat burglar.

The Christopher Nolan trilogy of Batman films is only one of two series (Pirates of the Caribbean being the other) to have two of its films earn more than $1 billion worldwide.Slide8

Lego Batman games for children

The game was very well received for its story, voice acting and gameplay. ‘Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes’ was the second game in the trilogy of Lego Batman games, and it received the highest rating of all three from IGN, receiving 8.5 out of 10.
