He was 79. “He was suffering from a chest ailment and had been hos - pitalized in SKIMS a month back. He was subsequently discharged, however Wednesday evening he breathed his last after suffering from multiple organ failure,” family sources said. Vakil joined politics at an early age and was a Member of Parliament in 1977, then became a state minister in 1983. He was elected speaker of the state Leg - islative Assembly in 1996. Governor, N.N. Vohra has expressed grief over the demise of Vakil. In his condolence mes - sage the Governor expressed sympathy with Vakil’s family and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul. Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has condoled the demise. In his condolence mes - sage, Omar highlight - ed the role and contri - bution of Vakil in the political, developmen - tal and social fields in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the late leader always worked for the welfare and betterment of the people. He conveyed his solidarity and sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed for peace to the departed soul. Locals foil kidnapping of sarpanch in Shopian village 1 dies in road accident Srinagar, July 10: A sumo driver died in a road accident in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. Police said a Tata Sumo bearing registration number JK09-2710 skidded off the road and fell in a gorge at Tia Mode Karnah, resulting in on spot death of the driver, Tanveer Ahmad son of Raja Shabir Ahmad resident of Teetwal. The body was handed over to his legal hairs for last rites. Police has registered a case in this regard. Resist warnings by unidentied gunmen SHOWKAT DAR Shopian, July 10: Inhabit - ants of Bohri Halan village here on Wednesday evening foiled attempt of unidentified gunmen to kidnap sarpanch there. Panic gripped the village when a group of unidenti - fied gunmen barged into the house of Sarpanch, Muzafar Ahmad Hajam at 10 pm. “The gunmen tried to abduct the sarpanch, howev - er his family members raised an alarm attracting atten - tion of their neighbours who rushed towards the house. The gunmen took the sar - panch alongwith them, how - ever, the inhabitants includ - ing women followed them,” witnesses said. “The gunmen asked them to go back, but they refused. Irked by the refusal the gunmen fired in air, however the inhabitants offered stiff resistance. Sensing trouble, the gunmen released the sar - panch and escaped from the spot,” they said. Locals found the sarpanch unconscious and rushed him to hospital. “Doctors said he has suffered a minor heart attack,” they said. Soon after the incident police reached the spot and carried search operations were carried in the area. Police has registered a case in police station Shopian. Contact No. 9697380641 Sd/ Chairman 004 Ex-Hizb commander sentenced to life Srinagar, July 10: A former divisional commander of Hizbul Mujahedeen was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case in Pattan area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district nine years ago. The district and additional sessions judge Baram - ulla, Tasleem Arief convicted Maqsood Ahmad Bhat on charges of murdering Dr Reyaz Ahmed Bhat in 2005. The additional Sessions Judge Baramulla observed that ‘this is a case of murder without any enmity.’ “There is nothing so uncommon about this crime to deem it as exceptional case in which instead of life imprisonment, death sentence could be awarded. Though the innocent has lost life in the instant case but it does not fall in the category of rarest of rare cases where the death sentence is warranted,” the court observed. “The convict is therefore sentenced to imprisonment for life for the commission of offence u/s 302 RPC and 7/27 I A Act,” said the Judge in his order. According to the prosecution, the accused Maqsood Bhat killed Dr Reyaz Ahmed Bhat of Hanzura Pattan, a PDP Block President, on June 16, 2005. “A case under FIR no. 87/2005 under section 302 of the RPC was regis - tered in police station Pattan”. According to police, Maqsood Ahmad Bhat alias Tariq alias Altaf Sheikh of Parraypora in Mamoosa Pattan was apprehended by the police from Pattan on 15 January in 2007. “Bhat, a Hizb divisional com - mander, was active in north Kashmir since 1996 and involved in the killing of eleven people including the PDP Block President Dr Reyaz Ahmed Bhat,” said the chargesheet.
