The work of the plasterer includes the application ofplaster to interior walls and ceilings in order to producea ne nished surface.They are also engaged on theapplication of protective coverings of cement, plasterand similar materials to the outside of building surfaces.The work also involves the preparation of surfaces byfastening metal or wooden laths to hold plaster. Inaddition, a plasterer may be required to lay the nishingsurface of cement oors for houses, factories andPlasterers are generally employed in theconstruction industry or may be self-employed. ararrere are y,r. or are fr ar ofOpportunities arise from time-to-time for promotion tosupervisor level. Many persons use an apprenticeship asa rst step in proceeding to such occupations asowners of businesses. Where apprentices and crafts persons have thenecessary abilityinitiative and basic qualications,opportunities are available for advancement. Theseinclude advanced technological and managementcourses which are available in Institutes of Technology,Schools of Management, Professional Institutes, etc. Persons anxious to advance themselves in their careersare advised to discover for themselves whatopportunities are available. Educational RequirementsThe minimum age at which the employment of anapprentice may commence is 16 years of age.The minimum educational requirements are:1.Grade D in ve subjects in the Department ofEducation & Skills Junior CerticateExamination or an approved equivalent,or2.The successful completion of an approved Pre-Apprenticeship courseorYou must obtain a job as an apprentice in your chosenoccupation. Your employer must be approved to trainapprentices and must register you as an apprentice within 2 weeks of recruitment.In certain crafts, apprenticeship applicants are requiredto pass a colour vision test approved by SOLAS. o a Personal qualities and Skills You must be physically t, as the work involves a lot ofbending, lifting and stretching. Plasterers often work at heights using ladders orscaolding.
