The Why: Stressors Unique to PPS and found in Trauma-Exposed Work Take a quiet minute to reflect on the following questions in your journal : How do you describe your work to someone on the outside? What do you feel comfortable talking about? What do you tend to hold back?

The Why: Stressors Unique to PPS and found in Trauma-Exposed Work Depends on relationship I have with person Unsure if I’m doing a good job in my work-hard to measure Mentor 1st and 2nd year SPED teachers - positive reactions Tell people I’m a teacher Not feeling stress about the work I do - like to put it out there because it’s important work Share confidential info with those who have similar/confidential experiences Dysfunction from leadership and others not understanding my job and the program within I work and do not solicit information from us My work feels pretty clear to me Seeing the conditions that students are learning in and coming from Follow-up around schools and district are harder to have What I’m willing to share - have a clear cut-off of what I talk about People thinking they know what I do or what is stressful Teachers feeling inadequate - wondering if that is reality everywhere Hold back on a lot in external conversations when I’m seeing and hearing a lot in the schools People wanting the inside scoop of what’s going on

Training Goals Take stock of stressors at home and at work Enhance self care at home and at work Improve work/life balance Develop Compassion Fatigue resiliency Make a commitment to implement changes

After a hard day...how do you debrief? Helpers who bear witness to many stories of abuse and violence notice that their own beliefs about the world are altered and possibly damaged by being repeatedly exposed to traumatic material. Karen Saakvitne and Laurie Ann Pearlman, Trauma and the Therapist (1995) Sometimes we keep it inside and sometimes we dump it on another person. When we do this, we are “sliming” ourselves or others.

Strategy: Low Impact Debriefing Self Awareness Fair Warning Consent Low Impact Disclosure Françoise Mathieu

Now let’s practice! No sliming - use your strategy card to practice the protocol.

Who says teaching is stressful?

Make a commitment to change one step at a time in bite-size pieces! Commit to using one of the tools prior to the end of January: Window of Tolerance Framework or Low Impact Debriefing protocol
