Abstract

I am enrolled in RA 73s, and I served with the Bulldog Pantry. This organization’s main service is food distributions, but they also participate in holiday events such as the Lutheran Church Trunk or Treat and Toys for Tots. I created flyers for the Trunk or Treat, and I gathered applicants’ information for Toys for Tots. The Bulldog Pantry provides hands-on experience and allows students to get involved with the community.

My Service with the

Bulldog Pantry Because of the wide array of opportunities that the Bulldog Pantry provides, there were many new skills that I was able to practice. One skill I was able to practice was my skill of engagement with others. Since I was a part of the Toys for Tots sign ups, I was able to introduce myself to families and inform them about the event and the requirements to be signed up for the distribution. Another skill I was able to practice was my creativity. During the Trunk or Treat event, I was asked to create flyers to inform the public about the event. I was able to use my creative abilities to create an attractive and informational flyer. Finally, one of the many skills that I acquired was learning to communicate in different forms. Many of the individuals that shop at the Bulldog Pantry speak Spanish, in which I only understood and spoke a little of. To communicate with these people, I asked others, used context clues, and used hand motions to create a picture of what I intended to say. These skills came easy to me since my professor, Rosanna Ruiz, has taught us to be friendly, adaptable, and prepared.

Community Impact The Bulldog Pantry provides a secure and comfortable environment for families to get groceries, clothing, and even toys. My friends and I pack fruits, vegetables, and pastries for families to enjoy in their home. We also set up tables in front of the Bulldog Pantry entry organized with donated clothing for families to pick up before they gather their groceries. These two necessities that the Bulldog Pantry provides creates a happy and more joyful community, but it does not stop there. The Bulldog Pantry also participates in the Toys for Tots event, in which I take part in. Toys for Tots is an organization that gives toys to underprivileged families during Christmas. I have been privileged with the opportunity of inquiring the needed information from many different families to sign up for Toys for Tots. I have been able to communicate with families and individuals who have been undergoing different hardships; allowing me to see and hear about the many different hardships that these communities may be going through. This event allows families to create new memories during Christmas without the concern of affordability, but it has also allowed me to interact with an unfamiliar community that I was able to be educated on.
