School Choice Update for the 2019-2020 School Year May 2019 Principals’ Meeting Pupil Personnel Services

School Choice “Next Steps”All School Choice applicants have been notified via email that their 19-20 application has either been “granted” or “denied.” “Denied” applicants may reapply for the subsequent school year during the next Districtwide window in December 2019. Note that the published School Choice guidelines explicitly specify that all communication will occur via email. Each applicant acknowledged these prior to applying. Hard copy “granted” letters no longer exist. The campus School Choice Point of Contact at the “granted” campus will upload electronic copies into the School Choice Docuware folder. “Granted” applicants will need to accept the available seat at the “granted” school of choice no later than Thursday, June 6 (the one year acceptance provision has been eliminated). They will provide a copy of the “granted” letter, current proof of NEISD residence, and any other necessary documents for enrollment. Blocking and revocation procedures remain the same.

School Choice application reminders: No provisions were made for siblings Applicants were not permitted request a Magnet School or other specialized program – i.e. dual language Students transitioning from Elementary to Middle School or Middle to High School were required to submit a new application for the requested feeder pattern campus A pplications for students with special needs were reviewed by Special Education to verify that no additional staffing obligations or programmatic concerns would prevent granting any individual application No transportation is provided Subsequent Employee-Child Transfer application approvals are contingent upon seat availability

Additional School Choice considerations:Reiterating the Thursday, June 6 seat acceptance deadline to Assistant Principals/Data Processor/office staff Maintaining “newly enrolled” application process with 5-day approval or denial window ( i.e. no prior enrollment in NEISD or returning to NEISD after >1 year absence and the absence was not due to discipline or to avoid a disciplinary assignment) Promoting email account recovery (next year’s application will ideally include a valid email address as a required field)
