Your Child Wants to Start a Music Channel on YouTube — Now What? Children today have big dreams, and they believe that following those dreams can be possible. This is especially true of children with a musical gift and a desire to share it with the world. Many children who play musical instruments enjoy performing and i mproving for their audience. When they see other musician children on YouTube, making videos and following their dream, your child may be inspired to do the same. So what do you do when your child asks to start a music channel on YouTube? This could be the first ambitious step to a career of musical performance and excellence. Children who successfully make videos and complete their own projects are also more confident to tackle their dreams and careers in the future. Here are a few helpful steps that any p arent can take to help their child create their own music performance channel on YouTube. 1) Have an Encouraging Talk About Goals What does your child want to accomplish in their YouTube channel? Do they want to start a career in musical performance, make dance videos to favorite songs, or practice their video production skills like their favorite older YouTubers? Are they expecting a big audience and want to get into marketing, or would they be happy showing their videos mostly to friends and family? Do th ey have a plan for the YouTube music channel, or do they plan to just make one video at a time to see how it goes? Help your child build and define their short - term and long - term goals when it comes to their music channel and help them manage their expecta tions. Most YouTube channels start (and stay) small with a supportive audience of family and friends. If your child expects to reach super - stardom in a few weeks, provide a little perspective by exploring other small but fun channels by kids. There might be negative comments, trolls, and potential dangers from a public online video account. The safes t way for you to support your child during this endeavor is for you as the parent to serve as the official account owner, so you can provide oversight and content filtering to protect your child. Just in case, remember that you can turn on "comment approva l" or just turn off comments while your child gains understanding about internet feedback. Depending on the age of your child, have a serious and realistic talk about internet safety and how they can use your guidance to help them stay safe from the usual risks of building an online presence, even from overly enthusiastic fans of their musical performances. Take this as an opportunity to also talk about making sure they focus on purely positive content, contributing mainly their talent, positivity, and enthusiasm to the music community. 3) Make a Few Practice Videos and Try Out Video Editing The best way to g et started, before you even make the account, is to make a few videos. Encourage your child to use one of the household phones, tablets, or webcams to record their music performances. Practice making a continuous video with a tripod or other stabilizer. Pl ay with lights and sound recording quality. Then dive into video editing together. Help your child find a good (free, to start with) video editing program and practice exploring, clipping, transitions, and overlay effects. Many children are happy just maki ng videos, or decide that they'd rather focus on their music over production. And some will take to making their own videos for music like a fish to water. 4) Make a Performance for Your YouTube Music Channel Together iPhone showing a screen from the TikTok app. Once you have a few videos ready to upload, make the account and ch annel together. Because they are minors, you will need to make the account and be the official account holder. Explain this like you are the producer of their show, and they are the talent. They can take the videos in any (reasonable) direction they want t o go, whether that's serious concert - like performances or silly videos with their own music for the soundtrack. 5) Create Video Categories and Talk About Types of Video Series There are so many ways to make a fun YouTube music channel. Talk about the types of videos your child wants to make and set up a few sub - categories to upload videos into. This might include 'Performances' 'Projects' and 'News' videos, just to name a few examples. Your child might want to separate serious from silly videos, music from talking or become the host of their own inspired variety show. 6) Provide Ongoing Oversight and Account Management As your child develops their video style and pursues their dream as a professional public musician, be their manager and producer. Provide co ntinuous oversight, especially on the responses they are getting through and because of the channel. Make sure that all interactions are positive, constructive, and inspiring. Encourage your child to follow their dream, but also to come to you any time the y want to talk, brainstorm, or discuss their plans. 7) Help Your Child Improve Their Skills with Music Lessons Finally, most children who become enthusiastic about a performance career are also ambitious about their own talent. Music lessons are a wonderfu l way to build on their skills and the quality of videos they can produce for their YouTube music channel. Want to try out a free music lesson?
