Introduction to co-incidence

The concept of co-incidence is more commonly known than irony. However it can still be difficult to define.Slide3

What is co-incidence?

There are many different definitions of co-incidence, but a simple definition is :

Co-incidence is when two seemingly related events happen at the same time, but actually have no connection or reason.

Co-incidence can occur at any time, with no clear reason to explain why. Slide4

Co-incidences of the teacher

Here are two examples of co-incidence that may help to explain exactly what it is:

-

Koh

Tao story (when I first came to Thailand)

-Steps in SpainSlide5

Co-incidence in

humour

Co-incidence plays a key part in a lot of

comedy

due to the confusion and

humorous

situations

it can create.

We will look at some examples in a famous episode of British comedy in a future exercise.Slide6

Co-incidence and irony

Sometimes

co-incidence can occur in situations with irony at the same time

. It is often confusing where the co-incidence ends and the irony begins.

Listen to this story that contains both:

-The

story

from a previous EN102

co-incidence class

Can you figure out which part of the story is the co-incidence and which is the irony?

Slide7

Your own

co-incidences

Can anyone in this class think of any co-incidences that have happened to them?
